Yeahwon nominated for Latin Grammy

Jazz singer Yeahwon, 30, has become the first Korean musician nominated for a Latin Grammy Award.

The Latin Recording Academy announced yesterday the list of nominees for this year’s awards, which will be held in Las Vegas in November. Yeahwon is nominated for the best musica popular brasileira (MPB) album for her self-titled album “Yeahwon.”

The album, released a year ago, was produced by her jazz guitarist husband Chung Sun, a son of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra maestro Chung Myung-whun. It was created with the participation of several world-renowned jazz artists, including admired Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti; Blue Note Records pianist Kevin Hays; Jeff Ballard, drummer of the Brad Mehldau Trio; Mark Turner, a renowned contemporary saxophonist; and Brazilian percussion master Cyro Baptista.

After making her debut as a K-pop singer back in 2002 with her album “Lovely,” Yeahwon received attention from the media for her resonant and crystal-clear voice. She worked with a number of prominent K-pop singers including Kim Jin-pyo, Yoon Sang, Lee Seung-hwan and Leessang before leaving for New York to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in 2004. She graduated with honors two years later.

Last year, Yeahwon signed with ArtistShare, which has four Grammy Award-winning artists in its stable.

Yeahwon married Chung Sun in 2008 and the couple currently lives in New York.

신예원, 라틴 그래미상 후보됐다…정명훈 며느리

재즈 가수 신예원(30)이 한국인 처음으로 `라틴 그래미 어워드` 후보가 됐다.

15일 매니지먼트사 소니뮤직엔터테인먼트코리아에 따르면, 신예원의 브라질 재즈 앨범 `예원`이 11월10일 미국 라스베이거스에서 열리는 `제12회 라틴 그래미 어워드`의 `최우수 브라질 앨범(Musica popular Brasileria)` 부문에 노미네이트 됐다.

지난해 9월 미국 재즈 레이블 `아티스트셰어`를 통해 발매된 음반이다. 브라질 거장 이그베르투 지스몽치와 재즈 레이블 `블루 노트` 소속인 피아니스트 케빈 헤이즈, `브래드 멜다우 트리오`의 드러머 제프 발라드 등 내로라하는 재즈 뮤지션들이 대거 참여했다.

신예원의 남편인 기타리스트 정선이 프로듀서를 맡았다. 정선은 서울시립교향악단 예술감독인 지휘자 정명훈의 둘째아들로 뉴욕에서 레코딩 프로듀서로 활동 중이다.

2000년 제정된 라틴그래미어워드는 미국 그래미를 주관하는 `더 레코딩 아카데미`가 창립한 `더 라틴 아메리카 오브 레코딩 아츠 & 사이언스`가 주관한다.

스페인어와 포르투갈어로 부른 노래가 담긴 앨범들이 대상이다. 유행이나 상업성보다는 음악의 질 자체로 수상자를 결정하는 것으로 알려졌다.

소니뮤직은 "신예원의 수상 여부를 떠나 브라질의 전설적인 아티스트인 밀튼 나시멘토, 카에타노 벨로조, 자반 등과 함께 후보로 올랐다는 사실 만으로 뜻깊다"고 전했다.

한편, 동덕여대 실용음악과 출신인 신예원은 2002년 1집 `러블리`로 데뷔했다. 가수 이승환, 윤상 등의 앨범에 보컬로 참여했다. 미국 뉴욕의 재즈 명문 뉴스쿨 유니버시티를 나왔다.
