Insooni joins tax evasion club

It has been discovered that Insooni, one of Korea’s most admired singers, was charged with tax evasion in 2008 and paid a large fine, according to a report filed yesterday by a local news wire.

Insooni reported less income than she actually made in 2008 and the National Tax Service charged her a “hefty fine,” without revealing the exact figure, according to a report by Newsis on Monday.

The 54-year-old singer had no official comment on the news. She participated in the taping of an episode of MBC’s “Survival: I Am a Singer” yesterday as scheduled.

Born to a Korean mother and African-American father who was a solider dispatched to Korea, she has represented racial minorities in Korea. That, in addition to her powerful singing ability, has propelled her to the top of the charts.

In 2007, she was named the “entertainer with the most integrity” in a survey of 1,000 people conducted by the Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Tax evasion has emerged as a hot-button issue in the entertainment industry in recent weeks.

MC and comedian Kang Ho-dong on Sept. 9 declared he would tentatively retire amid public criticism of him following the discovery that he had been found guilty of tax evasion and fined hundreds of millions of won (hundreds of thousands of dollars).

Actress Kim A-joong was also ordered to pay 600 million won in fines for tax evasion earlier this month.

연예인 세금 논란 계속되나

강호동, 김아중에 이어 인순이까지, 연일 세금 논란으로 시끄러운 가운데, 세무조사는 계속되고 있어 향후 또 다른 논란이 생겨날 것인지 관심을 모으고 있다.

지난 19일 이슈가 된 인순이의 경우에도, 조사를 맡았다고 알려진 서울지방 국세청 조사4국 관계자는 "해당 사건이 있었는지 확인하고 있지만, 확인 결과는 외부에 공개할 수 없다. 과세 정보에 해당하는 것이라 개인정보 보호법상 밝힐 수 없기 때문"이라고 말했다.

앞으로도 국세청은 정보 관리에 더욱 힘쓸 가능성이 높다. 납세자연맹이 지난 9일 강호동과 김아중의 탈세 의혹 관련 보도와 관련, 국세청에 대해 `공공기관의 개인정보 보호에 관한 법률 위반죄` 및 `형법상 공무상 비밀누설죄` 혐의로 서울중앙지방검찰청에 고발장을 제출한 상태이기 때문.

국세청에서 정보가 확인되지 않고, 고의성을 가진 탈세 의혹이 드러나지 않는 한, 강호동의 경우처럼 극단적인 사례는 또 나오진 않을 것이라는 게 연예계 대체적인 시각. 인순이도 20일경 공식입장을 밝힐 예정이긴 하지만, 지난 19일 MBC `나는 가수다` 녹화에 정상적으로 참여했고 미리 녹화해둔 `놀러와`도 이날 밤 예정대로 전파를 탔다.
