Security guard adds to details of Jacko’s death scene

LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson’s head of security recounted on Wednesday how the star’s children crumpled in shock as they saw their apparently dead father being given heart massage in his bedroom.

The court also heard that Conrad Murray, accused of manslaughter over Jackson’s death two years ago, asked aides if any of them knew how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

“Paris was on the ground balled up crying, and Prince was standing there, and he just had a real shocked, you know just slowly crying type of look on his face,” said Faheem Muhammad, referring to two of Jackson’s three children.

“I went and gathered them together, and I kind of talked to them for a second, got the nanny,” he said, recounting how Jackson died.

“And we walked downstairs and put them in a different location”

He was describing the scene after he was called up to the bedroom of Jackson’s rented mansion in the plush Holmby Hills district of Los Angeles on June 25, 2009, when the star died of an overdose of a powerful sedative.

Murray, who had been treating Jackson while he prepared for a series of comeback concerts in London, appeared to be giving the singer CPR when Muhammad entered the room, he said.

“He appeared very nervous ... he was sweating. He appeared to be administering CPR,” he said, adding that Jackson’s body was lying on the floor next to the bed.

Asked to describe Jackson he said: “His eyes were open ... his mouth was slightly open.” Asked if he appeared to be dead, he replied: “Yes.”

Alberto Alvarez, another bodyguard, was already in the room when Muhammad arrived, he said, recounting how Murray asked the two men for help. “Dr. Murray asked the question, ‘Does anyone know CPR?’”

Muhammad did not explain whether Murray, a qualified and experienced cardiologist, was asking for help giving Jackson CPR while he intended to do something else.

주치의 머레이 첫 재판

　2009년 6월 25일 사망한 ‘팝의 황제’ 마이클 잭슨의 녹음 육성이 27일(현지시간) 미국 로스앤젤레스 법정에서 울려퍼졌다. 검찰이 과실치사 혐의로 기소된 잭슨의 주치의 콘래드 머레이(58)의 재판에서 잭슨이 숨지기 6주 전 머레이가 녹음한 둘 사이의 전화 통화 내용을 공개한 것이었다. 믿기 힘들 정도로 쇠약하고 더듬거리는 잭슨의 목소리에 배심원단을 비롯해 법정에 있던 모든 사람이 숙연해졌다.

　잭슨에게 과도하게 약물을 투여해 숨지게 했다는 혐의를 받고 있는 머레이의 재판이 시작됐다. CNN 등을 통해 미국 전역으로 생중계된 이날 재판에서 검찰과 머레이 쪽은 잭슨의 사망 원인을 놓고 치열한 공방을 벌였다.

　검찰은 모두진술에서 “잭슨의 사망은 명백한 살인”이라고 주장했다. 검찰은 “잭슨이 머레이에게 생명을 맡겼지만, 그가 잭슨을 죽음으로 내몰았다”며 “한 달에 15만 달러라는 엄청난 보수를 놓치지 않기 위해 머레이는 잭슨에게 필요 이상으로 과도한 약물을 투여했다”고 밝혔다. 또 잭슨의 육성 녹음을 공개한 뒤 “이 통화는 잭슨이 마취제로도 쓰이는 수면제 프로포폴을 복용한 상태에서 이뤄진 것”이라며 “목소리에서 알 수 있듯이 잭슨은 이미 심각한 상태였는데도, 이후에도 과도한 처방은 계속됐다”고 설명했다.

　잭슨이 사망한 당일에 대해서도 “ 응급구호팀과 응급실 의사에게도 잭슨이 복용한 약물에 대해 제대로 알리지 않았다”고 지적했다.

　이에 머레이의 변호사인 에드 체르노프는 “잭슨이 자신을 죽음으로 내몰았다”고 반박했다. 그는 “ 머레이는 (실패하기는 했지만) 잭슨이 프로포폴을 끊도록 무던히도 애를 썼다”고 설명했다. 이어 “잭슨은 의사의 지시를 따르지 않고 마음대로 양을 정해 프로포폴을 복용했다” 고 주장했다.

　체르노프는 또 잭슨의 사망 당일에 대해서도 “잭슨이 계속해서 프로포폴을 달라고 요구했다”고 말했다. 잭슨이 애원했고, 머레이가 잠시 방을 비운 사이 두 가지 약물을 한꺼번에 복용했다는 것이다. 체르노프는 “잭슨은 프로포폴을 복용하기 전에 안정제인 로라제팜을 먹었는데, 여섯 명을 잠에 빠질 수 있게 할 만한 양이었다”며 “이로 인해 잭슨은 눈을 감을 사이도 없이 곧바로 사망했다”고 말했다.
