Korea bests UAE 2-1 for second win

Korea beat the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a Asian-region qualification match for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil on Tuesday, maintaining top spot in Group B.

The senior team, led by head coach Cho Kwang-rae, secured their second victory in the penultimate round of continental qualifiying by winning the match against the UAE 2-1 in Suwon, 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) south of Seoul.

With the score at 0-0 at halftime, captain Park Chu-young scored in the first five minutes of the second half to give Korea the lead.

The second goal was secured midway through the second half as Ki Sung-yueng’s corner kick led to a goal after hitting UAE defender Hamdan Al Kamali in the head.

Bucking Korea’s domination, the UAE’s Ismail Matar secured his first goal close to the end but failed to turn the tide.

With this latest victory, Korea consolidated their position in Group B with seven points. The country beat Lebanon 6-0 at home and drew Kuwait 1-1 on the road last month.

Korea faces the UAE again on Nov. 11 and Lebanon on Nov. 15.
