With Choi’s win, Koreans reach 100 in the LPGA

Choi finished at 15-under 269 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club and earned $285,000.
She birdied the par-3 17th to pull ahead and parred the par-4 18th to hold off Tseng a week after finishing second behind the Taiwanese star at the Hana Bank LPGA Championship in Incheon.
“I took something from last week,’’ Choi said. “I had a great experience from last week. ... I did my best last week. ... So I learned something. And then this week, I had a great feeling about my game. I played so well this week.’’
Choi became only the second Korean winner on the LPGA Tour this year, joining U.S. Women’s Open champion Ryu So-yeon.
The victory was also the 100th LPGA Tour win by players of Korean descent.
Ku Ok-hee was the first female golfer of Korean descent to win an LPGA event at the 1988 Standard Register Turquoise Classic in Phoenix.
“I won my fifth tournament and marked hundred wins for all of the Korean players,’’ Choi, who is claiming her fifth LPGA trophy in the last three years, said. “So it’s very nice. Icing on the cake.’’
Tseng, a six-time LPGA Tour winner this season, parred the final two holes for a 65. She earned $176,791 to push her tour-leading total to $2,563,629.
“Na-yeon played great and she made a couple birdies on the back nine,’’ said Tseng, set to play next week in the inaugural LPGA Taiwan Championship.
“I finished second this week, that means I still have space to improve next week. I think after these last two weeks I’m ready for next week. I’m excited for it and looking forward to do my best. I’m looking forward to trying to win next week.’’
Tseng, four strokes behind Choi entering the round, pulled even at 14 under with birdies on the par-3 15th and par-5 16th.
“Today, before I’m going to play, I tell myself, ‘Just shoot 6 under and finish 14 under,’ ” Tseng said. “So, this is my goal today, and I achieved my goal and didn’t win. That’s all that happened. I do my best and then I played my best today.”
After Tseng missed a birdie opportunity on No. 17, Choi hit her tee shot to about 5 feet to set up the deciding birdie.
“I wasn’t nervous when I started today but started getting nervous on 15 when I hear that Yani went birdie, birdie,’’ Choi said. “So I was nervous, like from 15, 16, 17, 18. I was so nervous, but I had a great result. It feels amazing.’’

23년 7개월의 기다림, 100승 마무리는 24세 최나연
한국(계) 선수의 미국여자프로골프(LPGA) 투어 '통산 100승 퍼즐'이 마침내 완성됐다.
최나연(24·SK텔레콤·세계랭킹 4위)이 풀리지 않을 것 같은 마법을 풀었다. 최나연은 16일 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르 골프장(파71·6208야드)에서 끝난 사임다비 LPGA 말레이시아 대회 마지막날 3타를 줄여 합계 15언더파 269타로 우승했다.
지난 7월 유소연(21·한화)의 US여자오픈에서 우승으로 통산 99승을 채운 한국(계) 여자 선수들은 최나연의 우승으로 7전8기 끝에 100승의 금자탑을 쌓았다. 1988년 3월 구옥희(55)가 스탠다드 레지스터 대회에서 우승한 이후 23년7개월만이다.
최나연은 대회 최종일 6타를 줄이면서 맹추격한 라이벌 청야니(대만·14언더파)를 박빙의 1타 차로 꺾고 지난 9일 LPGA 하나은행 챔피언십의 패배를 설욕했다. 최나연은 15, 16번홀에서 연속 버디를 한 청야니에게 공동선두를 내줘 또다시 통산 100승은 '아홉수'의 징크스에서 헤어나질 못할 것처럼 보였다. 그러나 최나연은 17번홀(파3)에서 결정적인 버디로 100승을 포효했다. 최나연은 "그동안 많은 선배들이 일군 100승의 주인공이 돼 기쁘고 (박)세리 언니에게 감사드린다"고 말했다.
최나연이 그 마침표를 찍었지만 한국(계) 선수의 100승의 한 중심에는 박세리(34·KDB산은금융그룹)가 있다. 첫 승은 구옥희가 열었고, 고우순(47)이 일본에서 열린 LPGA 투어(토레이 재팬 퀸스컵)에서 94년과 95년 잇따라 우승하면서 세계 여자골프무대를 제패했지만 100승의 확고한 터를 닦은 것은 역시 박세리다.
1998년 LPGA 투어로 진출한 박세리는 그해 5월 맥도널드 LPGA챔피언십을 시작으로 US여자오픈까지 첫 해 메이저대회 2승을 포함해 단일 시즌 4승의 폭풍 질주를 펼쳤다. 특히 US여자오픈 연장전 18번홀에서 신발과 양말을 벗고 흰 발을 드러낸 채 물에 들어간 공을 쳐낸 장면은 당시 외환위기로 실의에 빠진 국민들에게 용기와 희망을 줬다. 박세리 키즈의 탄생도 이 장면이 계기가 됐다. 박세리는 LPGA 투어에서 한국 선수 가운데 가장 많은 25승을 거뒀고 2007년 명예의 전당에 가입했다.
박세리와 함께 LPGA 투어 1세대를 이끈 김미현(34)이 8승을, 장타자 박지은(32)이 6승으로 한 축을 이뤘다. 한희원(33)의 6승도 빛났다. 박세리를 롤모델로 삼아 성장한 신지애(23)가 8승을 했고 최나연이 5승을 거두며 눈부시게 활약했다.
박세리는 16일 "대회장에 최나연과 함께 있었는데 가슴이 찡하는 순간이었다. 정말 내가 하고 싶었던 우승이었는데 (최)나연이가 큰 일을 해냈다. 100승을 계기로 한국여자골프가 세계 무대에서 다시 한번 우뚝 선 날이 됐다"고 기뻐했다.
