Park trains for world record in swimming

Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan said yesterday his goal at next year’s London Olympics isn’t just to win a gold medal, but to set a world record.

The 2008 Olympic champion in the men’s 400-meter freestyle and two-time world champion for that distance, Park said his winning times have left much to be desired.

“I have done well at world championships and at the Asian Games, but my records show that I’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Park said at a press conference yesterday. The 22-year-old won world titles in 2007 and 2011, and collected six gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 Asian Games.

“My ultimate goal is to set a world record, and I am pretty driven to pull that off,” he added.

Park, a 400-meter specialist, plans to compete in both the 400 meters and 200 meters races in London.

More so than in the past, Park this year has openly talked about his desire to break a world record, especially in the 400 meters. After winning the 400-meter title at this year’s world championships in Shanghai, Park reacted with disappointment that he didn’t set a new record.

The 400-meter freestyle world record is 3:40.07, compared to Park’s personal best of 3:41.53, and the freestyle 200-meter record is 1:42.00, whereas Park’s best-ever time is 1:44.80.

Both records were set by Paul Biedermann of Germany at the 2009 world championships during the height of the high-tech swimsuit frenzy, when polyurethane suits - since banned - were credited with producing 43 world records overall at the event.

Park has never donned a high-tech suit, and Biedermann himself hasn’t come close to matching those times in less advanced suits. The Korean star said he is solely focused on the performance.

“If I can prepare the right way, I think I will be on the top at the end,” Park said. “I am not yet in my best shape. The plan is to be up to 80 percent ready by June, just before the Olympics, and then to start working on my racing management.”

In the 400 meters, Park has been the man to beat over the past four years, aside from a hiccup at the 2009 world championships, when he failed to make the final. In the 200 meters, Park’s performance has been more up and down.

박태환 "세계신기록 올림픽에서 세우겠다"

"제가 목표하고 있는 세계신기록을 내년 런던올림픽에서 세울 수 있게 준비하고 있습니다."

수영 스타 박태환(22·단국대)이 17일 서울 중구 을지로 SKT타워에서 열린 기자회견에서 호주 1차 전지훈련을 앞두고 세계신기록에 대한 열망과 런던올림픽에서의 각오를 밝혔다.

20일 출국할 예정인 박태환은 "지금 몸이 전체적으로 많이 올라오지 않은 상태다"라며 "1차에서 수영과 체력 상태를 80%까지 만들어 내년 올림픽 직전인 6월부터 한달 반 정도 레이스 운영감각을 키울 수 있게 서서히 준비하겠다"고 훈련 계획을 설명했다.

그는 "그동안 아시아게임과 세계선수권대회에서 좋은 성적을 냈지만 (아직) 많이 부족하다는 것이 기록에서 나타난다"며 "목표 달성이 세계 신기록이기 때문에 의욕도 많고 욕심도 난다"고 말했다.

또 "전체적으로 준비해 나가는 과정을 잘 쌓아나간다면 나중에 산 정상에서 좋은 모습을 보일 수 있지 않을까 생각한다. 노력하고 있다"고 덧붙였다.

박태환은 내년 런던올림픽에서 자유형 200ｍ와 400ｍ에 출전할 계획이다.

박태환은 400ｍ에서 베이징 올림픽 금메달을 따냈고 지난 7월 상하이 세계선수권대회에서도 정상에 오르는 등 좋은 경기를 펼쳐왔다.

200ｍ에서는 아시아기록을 보유하고 있지만 400ｍ에서 펼친 활약에 비해서는 아쉬운 측면이 있다.

박태환은 두 종목에 대해 "어느 하나에 비중을 두지 않는다. 둘다 중요한 경기니 훈련할 때도 하나에 집중하지 않고 골고루 한다"고 설명했다.

하지만 "200ｍ가 400ｍ보다 아쉬워서 집중훈련을 하고 싶다"며 "200ｍ에서는 스타트와 턴이 중요한데 보완해서 좋은 경기를 보여드릴 수 있게 하겠다"고 다짐했다.

박태환은 또 "베이징올림픽 때 금메달을 따고난 후에는 4년 후에도 무조건 금메달을 딸 수 있을 것이라고 생각했다"며 "지금도 할 수 있다고 생각하지만 단순히 `할 수 있어`가 아니라 `할 수 있게 해야 한다`고 생각한다"고 덧붙였다.

박태환은 쑨양(중국), 파울 비더만(독일) 등 라이벌들에 대해 "신경이 안 쓰이면 그게 이상한 것"이라며 "라이벌 얘기를 들으면 오히려 승부욕이 더 불타고 더 이를 악물게 돼 플러스 요인으로 작용한다"고 강조했다.

한편 박태환은 지난 9월 단국공고에서의 4주간 교생실습에 대해 "런던 가는 과정에서 힘들 때 도움이 많이 될 것 같아 뜻 깊었다"며 "학생들과의 의사소통은 좋은 추억으로 남을 것 같다"고 전했다.
