Chicago Tribune names ‘Poetry’ film of the year

The Chicago Tribune named Korean movie “Poetry” as this year’s best movie.

On Dec. 18, the Chicago Tribune introduced 10 of the best movies of the year, of which “Poetry,” directed by Lee Chang-dong, was deemed the best. In second place was “Money Ball” featuring Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt while third place went to French movie “Copie Conforme” starring Juliette Binoche.

The Korean movie singled out by the paper’s movie critic is a tale about an elderly woman who strives to write poetry despite Alzheimer’s and the hardships of the life around her. The film has also won the award for the best screenplay at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The movie has been recognized by various international movie awards and panels. Lee’s film was named best picture at the 25th Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland which ran from March 19 to 26. The director was awarded with 30,000 Swiss francs ($32,016).
The film also received the jury award at the International Federation of the Cinematographic Press for promoting cinema as an art and encouraging upcoming cinematographers.

The film was the fifth work to be written by the novelist-turned-director Lee who was also the former minister of culture, sports and tourism.
