Singer Kim Bo-kyung’s new song thought to be a work of plagiarism

Singer Kim Bo-kyung released a song called “Echo” on Dec. 22. The song was composed by Korea Music Copyright Association’s (KOMCA’s) talent search winners Cha Seung-min and Jung Soo-min. The two composers make up the songwriting team called “Lovecity” and was awarded first place on the composer search project “I Am a Musician” co-hosted by music portal site Soribada and KOMCA in October.

The song the duo wrote for Kim reached the no. 1 spot on various music charts online upon release. However many are claiming that the intro and chorus of “Echo” sound too much like IU’s song “You Are Always Like That” from two years ago. Idol singer IU’s song was composed by Lee Young-joon.
On Dec. 29 a representative from Kim’s agency said that they have yet to make decisions on what step to take from this point on.
“This afternoon the composers are set to meet and discuss the track in question. After the meeting, we’ll have an idea of what direction to take.”

Meanwhile netizens who have listened to both tracks are saying, “Wow, the intro is exactly the same,” “It sounds similar, I wonder what the composers will say.” Kim rose to fame from the singing survival show “Super Star K.”
