Pyeongchang gets 2018 Olympics

테스트

On July 6, the mountain town of Pyeongchang, located about 180 kilometers east of Seoul, was finally named the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics after falling in two earlier bids.

The alpine town in Gangwon beat out Munich and Annecy, France, in the first round of voting at the 123rd International Olympic Committee General Assembly in Durban, South Africa. With 95 IOC members taking part in the vote, Pyeongchang received 63 votes, followed by Munich with 25 and Annecy with seven.

Pyeongchang has previously fallen to Vancouver, Canada and Sochi, Russia in two previous bids for the quadrennial winter event, but under the slogan “New Horizons,” it played out a different strategy with an inspiring presentation in its third bid attempt.

With the victory, Korea became the sixth nation in the world to host four major international sport events - Summer and Winter Olympics, World Cup and World Championships in Athletics. Meanwhile, the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic organizing committee was founded on Oct. 19 and started its preparation work. Kim Jin-sun, former Gangwon governor, was named the head of the committee.
