Fan convicted of stalking Chaeyeon has fine reduced on appeal
The defendant was previously convicted of hacking into various online accounts belong to Chaeyeon to extract the star’s phone number but vowed to appeal her fine.
On many occasions from 2003, she followed Chaeyeon home and camped outside her apartment building. When the star declined the fan’s offer to meet up, she took more serious action to get the singer’s attention.
In 2008, the defendant managed to find out Chaeyeon’s resident registration number and used the details on various airline and government Web sites to obtain Chaeyeon’s login information. In 2010, the stalker hacked Chaeyeon’s accounts on Internet shopping Web sites and also found the star’s phone number. In subsequent years, Chaeyeon has had to change her number three times because of the obsessed fan.
Last year at trial, the defendant apologized to Chaeyeon and vowed to permanently stop her behavior.
“Chaeyeon agreed to look favorably upon her fan so long as she promised to never hack into the singer’s accounts again,” the court said on Jan. 18. “As the defendant showed great remorse for the crimes she committed, the fine was decreased,” the Seoul Central District Court said on Jan. 18.
