Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has 32 language majors and is educating 45 languages, making it the world’s 3rd rank university in foreign studies.

In various local rankings of universities, it has been maintaining the No. 1 place.

As of February 2012, the school has had exchanges and cooperations with 325 universities and 107 institutes in 79 countries.

One of the internationalization programs at HUFS is the 7+1 Visiting Student Program, which enables students to study at least one semester out of their total eight semesters at an overseas university and gain a more global outlook.

The program is divided into three categories, 7+1 free-competition dispatch students (for the British-American zone), 7+1 dispatch students selected by departments and 7+1 dispatch students with superior entrance exam scores.

The school also has an internship system at diplomatic offices with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The students selected for this internship can obtain real diplomatic experience at diplomatic offices and embassies while simultaneously receiving up to 12 credits from HUFS.

The Internship at Kotra Overseas Offices Program is another program selecting students with good language ability, skills and personality and sending them as interns to Kotra (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency) overseas offices.

The students can build up international insight and expert knowledge while receiving up to 12 credits from the school. Students have been dispatched each semester since 2008. In this way, currently 450 students have experienced a wider world.

There are other specialized programs at HUFS. The foreign language certification system of HUFS is different from the graduation tests that double major or intensified major students take.

The FLEX (Foreign Language Examination) is an evaluation system developed by HUFS after years of research in 1999. The students must obtain a certain level of grade at this test to graduate and certified of their foreign language ability before graduation.

HUFS also makes it mandatory for students to choose two majors so they can graduate with another major diploma in addition to their original.
