Woosuk University announced Monday that it will launch a new bachelor’s degree program that replicates the courses of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), starting from next March.

The students enrolled in Woosuk’s London School of International Studies will earn diplomas in either Politics and International Relations or Economics and Finance from the University of London, to which the prestigious college belongs.

They will also learn lessons from both local and LSE faculties with the same class materials and textbooks used in the London-based school.

All courses of the three-and-a-half-year program - which is set to accept 100 local students and 20 others abroad - will be taught in English at the newly-built Global Campus in Jincheon, North Chungcheong. The college plans to hire 80 percent of its staff from English-speaking countries to administer the course.

The university aims to offer the courses at the same level as the main campus and will be subject to the supervision of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), a U.K. independent body that oversees and offers guidance to the nation’s higher education institutes.

The tuition fee is set at 15 million won ($13,242) per year, a relatively expensive cost compared to the national average of around 7 million won.

But the school emphasized that the cost reflects an advanced, world-class curriculum and remains relatively cheap compared to that of many overseas colleges.

The students of the new program will share the online student community of LSE and get access to the Web site of LSE and the University of London.
