‘AM 11:00’ tops box office

Director Kim Hyun-seok’s new film “AM 11:00” took the top spot in the local box office over the weekend, making 2.7 billion won ($2.6 million) in ticket sales, according to the Korean Film Council yesterday.

The thriller features actress Kim Ok-vin and actors Jung Jae-young and Daniel Choi as they experiment with time travel in their lab.

As the movie’s plot is one that is rarely used in the Korean movie industry, many experts speculated that it could bring more people into local theaters after garnering almost 450,000 admissions since being released on Thursday.

Another Korean movie, “Marriage Blue” by director Hong Ji-young, was in second place, pushing “The Hunger Game: Catching Fire” down to the third spot.

“Marriage Blue” climbed up from third place last weekend, achieving 233,139 more admissions to make its accumulated total 841,563 as of Sunday.

Actor Im Chang-jung’s new movie “Tumbleweed” took fourth place with almost 12 percent of admissions over the weekend. It made over 1.5 billion won from Friday to Sunday. “Friend: The Great Legacy,” also known as “Friends 2” lost its top spot and slid to fifth place over the weekend.

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” came in sixth.
