Samsung Engineering signs Chile power plant contract

Samsung Engineering yesterday said it has signed a $441 million power plant contract from BHP Billiton Chile through the Special Purpose Company (SPC) Kelar - a Korean Southern Power (Kospo) and Samsung C&T Corporation consortium.

The BHP Billiton Chile development project is located in the Antofagasta region, north of Antofagasta City.

The gas-fired combined-cycle power plant receives natural gas from the Mejillones LNG Terminal and will produce 517 megawatts of electricity.

Samsung Engineering will conduct the project on a Lump Sum Turn Key (LSTK) basis for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning for the project, which is expected to be completed by 2016.

This is the builder’s second penetration of the South American market after the award of the fertilizer plant from Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) in Bolivia.
