‘Edge of Tomorrow’ dominates for a third week

Tom Cruise once again blew the local box office away with his latest sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow.” The film has been the best-selling movie in Korea for three consecutive weeks, attracting 573,945 viewers, according to the Korean Film Council.

In second place came crime thriller “A Hard Day,” starring Lee Sun-kyun and Lee Sung-min. The film, which was screened at the Directors’ Fortnight of the 67th Cannes International Film Festival last month, gained 371,618 more viewers and now has made 21 billion won ($20 million). Positive reviews from film critics and bloggers helped it rise as a strong player in the box office.

Christophe Gans’ adaptation of the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast” debuted as No. 3 with 165,762 viewers. Slightly trailing behind was local gangster film “For the Emperor” with 107,329 admissions.

Korea’s passion for art-house film did not ebb this season. After the success of “The Grand Budapest Hotel” in spring, Felix Herngren’s “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” finished No. 5 last weekend, earning 82,584 viewers nationwide.
