‘Currents’ hard and fast at No. 1 in the box office

The record-breaking movie “Roaring Currents” topped the weekend box office in Korea, adding more than 2.8 million viewers from Friday to Sunday and pushing overall ticket sales to more than 10 million.

According to the Korean Film Council yesterday, the movie, which opened on July 30, has made more than 22 billion won ($21 million) from weekend ticket sales.

After it garnered an audience of more than 10 million on Sunday, the movie is predicted by many local experts to become the biggest-selling Korean movie ever.

Avatar, a Hollywood film, is currently on top with an accumulated audience of more than 13 million.

Another Korean movie, “The Pirates,” with actress Son Ye-jin, came in second place at the local box office, taking about 25 percent of the weekend’s ticket sales.

Hollywood animation “How to Train Your Dragon 2” followed with 4.9 percent of ticket sales from Friday to Sunday.

Another Hollywood film, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” came close in fourth place with a 4.4 percent share.

Japanese animation “Detective Conan: Dimensional Sniper” came in at No. 5.
