‘The Pirates’ lock in box office No. 1 for week 2

Actress Son Ye-jin and actor Kim Nam-gil’s movie “The Pirates” is seeing a spurt in ticket sales almost a month after its release.

The movie, which hit local theaters a week after the record-breaking film “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” secured the No. 1 spot in the local box office for two consecutive weeks, according to the Korean Film Council. It entered in second place two weeks ago.

The movie has so far made 53 billion won ($52 million) in accumulated sales, garnering an audience of more than seven million. From Friday to Sunday, it added 4.8 billion won in sales from 620,866 tickets, accounting for 25.5 percent of the weekend’s total box office for domestic movies.

New Hollywood action blockbuster “Into the Storm” entered the local movie chart at No. 3, pushing “Roaring” to third place.

The Korean movie has failed to go over the 17 million mark for accumulated admissions, staying at 16,928,908.

Arts movie “Begin Again,” with Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, came in fourth, taking 12.2 percent of weekend ticket sales.

Hollywood movie “Ninja Turtles” entered the weekly chart at No. 5 on its opening weekend in Korea.
