Postal group wants better delivery notices

Korea Post and post officials from nine other nations that are part of the Kahala Posts Group yesterday at a CEO board meeting in Xian, China, agreed to improve their delivery notification systems and to ship to more countries.

The CEOs discussed better ways to deliver packages ordered online in China due to its burgeoning e-commerce market.

Alibaba, China’s biggest e-commerce website and a parent company of Tabao, a Chinese online shopping company, saw explosive growth in recent years as the country’s middle class has grown. The website accounts for about 80 percent of China’s e-commerce market with about 50,000 items traded per minute.

The Kahala group, established in 2002, consists of 10 state-run postal authorities from major countries. It was started as a way to discuss how postal services can stay competitive against private shipping companies like DHL. Of its 10 members, six are from the Asia-Pacific, three are from Europe, and one operator is from the United States.

Yesterday’s agreement was part of the Kahala 2020 roadmap, which aims to increase the quality of service and number of customers by recruiting six more countries to the group by 2020. The group wants countries in South America, Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia to join.

The roadmap aims to provide shipping day notification in more countries for parcels shipped through international mail services and to share ideas on improving shipping service customized for online shopping.

“The 2020 roadmap will help Korea Post to grow even more competitive in the global shipping market,” said Kim Joon-ho, head of the state-run post authority.
