‘Interstellar’ holds top space in Korea


Nothing could beat Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” at the weekend box office, despite a string of new film openings.

The ambitious feature garnered another 1,797,213 moviegoers, adding to its two-week total of 4,839,921, according to the Korean Film Council yesterday. It is currently occupying 1,410 screens nationwide and has earned 38.6 billion won ($35.3 million) so far.

Local director Boo Ji-young’s second directorial feature “Cart” debuted in second place, attracting an audience of 292,067 over the weekend.

The movie reveals the unstable work environment of temporary workers in Korea, which has surfaced as a serious issue recently as the number surpassed six million.

Offbeat teen comedy “Fashion King” dropped a notch to No. 3 with an audience of 93,816. The film, which is based on a popular webtoon of the same title, stars emerging actors Joo Won and Ahn Jae-hyun. Its two-week total is 539,662.

David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” was spotted in fourth even though a month has passed since it opened. It has earned 13 billion won so far in Korea with an audience of 1,675,263.

Cameron Diaz’s comedy flick “The Other Woman” debuted in fifth with 34,888 tickets sold.

“Harry Potter” hero Daniel Radcliffe’s rom-com debut “What If,” where he plays a medical school dropout who constantly fails in love, opened with an audience of 11,182 in eighth place.

It was at the top of the chart for diversity films, a classification for movies deemed low budget, art house or independent.
