Stay one step ahead with bright, pointed shoes

For the coming spring-summer season, shoe brands are taking things colorful and light. Dr. Martens, above, shows off its “Archieve Con-Gress Boot” while two pairs from Repetto’s new pointed-toe “Brigitte” collection can be seen on the right. Provided by each brand

Shoes will be colorful or pointy this season - or both.

Dr. Martens were the must-have boots in the 1990s. The company went through a slump around 2003, but in recent years it has regained its popularity, particularly because of its innovative use of patterns and vivid colors.

For its spring-summer collection, the British footwear and clothing brand adopted Japan’s traditional tattoo culture Irezumi for its trademark boots. To modernize its designs, the brand said the prints on the shoes mix graphics that look like cartoons, illustrations and even Hawaiian flower prints.

“Irezumi is a Japanese tattoo culture that the yakuza inked on their bodies. It used to be a symbol to invoke the fear of others but has now turned into an art form after years of effort from legendary Irezumi tattooists,” the brand said in a press statement.

“Some of our products like the 1460 and 1461 will be adorned such traditional Japanese Irezumi tattoo prints that have drawings of peacocks, carps or flowers.”

Dr. Martens also streamlined the signature design of its boots for spring, which used to be somewhat heavy, giving them a sleeker look.

The new Cruise collection will have pointed toes, unlike the usual Dr. Martens designs, to allow a “relatively petite and light look for spring and summer,” said the press statement.

French fashion brand Repetto also introduced pointed-toe shoes for its spring-summer collection this year. The Brigitte line is an upgraded version of the brand’s signature flat shoes, which were inspired by cotillon, a French social dance that started in the early 18th century.

As the steps are complex for the cotillon duet dance, the design of the shoes is more pointy than the brand’s iconic ballerina shoes, according to the company.

“The new design still has Repetto’s elegance, but the pointy toe will add a new look to the brand,” said an official from Repetto.
