KAFA event to showcase student films

테스트

Five works crafted by rookie directors from the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), one of the top film schools in Korea, kicked off its special screening event on Thursday.

KAFA FILMS 2015 will showcase three feature-length films and two animations from the institute’s advanced program, where graduate students receive full support to produce and distribute films.

The institute’s alumni include filmmakers Bong Joon-ho, Choi Dong-hoon and Hur Jin-ho, all of whom have won critical acclaim internationally.

This year’s lineup includes Ahn Gooc-jin’s black comedy “Alice in Earnestland,” which won the top prize for Korean films at this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival and opened in local theaters in August.

Hong Seok-jae’s “Socialphobia,” starring up-and-coming actors Byuen Yo-han and Lee Joo-seung, and which was released earlier this year, will be screened again during this event.

“The Night of the Prophet,” directed by Kim Sung-moo, was released simultaneously with the event’s opening on Thursday. The mystery thriller revives the apocalyptic movement from 1992 where some 1,000 religious people ardently waited for the end of the world in a cramped vinyl greenhouse in the countryside.

Kim said that the story from some 20 years ago still holds meaning today because “there are still a lot of people spending their days with false hopes.”

The film was invited to this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival.

Dystopian animation “Crimson Whale” by Park Hye-mi and “On the White Planet,” a socially conscious animated feature by Hur Bum-wook, will also be featured at the event.

The screening event will run until Sept. 30 at the Apgujeong CGV in southern Seoul, and will expand to three additional venues - the Myeongdong CGV in central Seoul, Indie Plus in southern Seoul and the Seomyeon CGV in Busan - from Sept. 24.

There will also be special sessions where the audience can discuss the films with the directors.
