‘Shameless’ takes top honors

Oct 05,2015
The Korean film “The Shameless” was chosen best film in the 24th Buil Film Awards.

The ceremony was hosted by the Busan-based daily newspaper the Busan Ilbo, which reported Saturday that the film also received two additional honors.

Jeon Do-yeon, who stars in the film, received Best Actress honors for her performance in the noir flick, which centers around the rocky relationship between Jae-gon (Kim Nam-gil), a detective pursuing a murder suspect, and Hye-kyung (Jeon), a bar hostess and the suspect’s long-time lover.

To catch the killer, the detective approaches Hye-kyung to ask her to work undercover.

The movie, directed and written by Oh Seung-wook, also grabbed the Best Music award.

Although “The Shameless” failed to attract a handsome number of moviegoers here, it has been critically acclaimed at international film festivals.

The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival prior to its opening in Korea.

Actor Lee Jung-jae of “Assassination” also took home the Best Actor award, while director Kwak Kyung-taek of “The Classified File,” a film based on a real kidnapping in Busan in 1978, received Best Director.

Buil Film Awards, one of the nation’s longest-running film award shows, was launched in 1958.
