Welcome initiatives for electric cars

Nov 18,2016
I am writing in response to your article “Korea stuck in low gear with electric vehicles” written by Jin Eun-soo and published on Nov. 14.

First of all, I greatly appreciate the article, which well evaluated the current bottlenecks for promoting electric vehicles in Korea with a broad perspective and an in-depth analysis. Given the immense environmental and climate challenges we are facing today, it is vital that electric mobility is adopted and promoted worldwide.

As a reader and resident in Korea, I could not agree more on the journalist’s arguments described in the articles such as incentives and subsidies for electric vehicles differing by local governments; various government bodies overseeing sporadic policies; and lack of significant electric charging infrastructure.

In order to support Korean climate gas reductions and leaving a minimal CO2 footprint in our host country, the EU Delegation in Korea has purchased an electric vehicle from my home region, which is on its way to Korea.

As ambassadors seldom leave the capital city and the range of driving with one full battery is not decisive, we thought to pioneer with this first electric car for EU ambassadors worldwide.

From our European perspective, we welcome and promote all initiatives related to clean energy and mobility and policies in general which preserve and sustain our climate and environment.

Gerhard Sabathil,
Ambassador of the European Union to Korea
