The Man Who Fell into Art: Collecting as a Form of Personal Narrative

Songeun Art Space

To Dec. 10: The exhibition provides a glimpse into Indonesian contemporary art led by young artists through the collection of a young art lover, who shares philosophies and visions with the artists.

The 36-year-old art collector Tom Tandio presents works by nine teams of young Indonesian artists among his collection.

They are Wisnu Auri, Wimo Ambala Bayang, Duto Hardono, Jompet Kuswidananto, Aditya Novali, Eko Nugroho, Albert Yonathan Setyawan, Melati Suryodarmo and Tromarama.

Admission is free. The art space is closed on Sundays. Go to Cheongdam Station, line No. 7, exit 9, and walk for 10 minutes.

HERMES: WANDERLAND

D Museum, Yongsan District

To Dec. 11: French luxury brand Hermes is showing off the house’s latest theme “Flanerie” through a glamorous exhibition at the D Museum in Hannam-dong. According to Hermes, “Flanerie,” is a French word that can be described as “wandering around freely.” Hermes has invited Seoulites to take time and enjoy walking around the museum like a Parisian with a walking stick in hand.

This interactive exhibition is divided in 10 sections, showcasing hundreds of objects from its collections.

Admission is free. The museum is a 15-minute walk from Hangangjin Station, line No. 6, exit No. 3.

AS THE MOON WAXES AND WANES

MMCA Gwacheon, Gyeonggi

To Feb. 12: The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) started to grow its collection in earnest 30 years ago at its Gwacheon branch. To celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the Gwacheon branch, the museum is holding a large-scale exhibition, which takes up the entire MMCA Gwacheon space. The exhibition features 560 pieces of artwork and documents, most of which are part of the existing collection, while others are newly commissioned.

Works by famous foreign artists and hot Korean contemporary artists are seen in the “Interpret Par 2 - Relation” section.

Admission is free. The museum is closed on Mondays. Go to Seoul Grand Park Station, line No. 4, exit No. 4 and take the shuttle bus.

100TH ANNIVERSARY OF KOREAN MODERN MASTER: YOO YOUNGKUK

MMCA Deoksu Palace, Jung District

To March 1: This is the largest-ever retrospective of Yoo Youngkuk, (1916-2002), one of the leading pioneers of Korean abstract art. About 100 of his paintings on view show both cosmopolitan qualities and the artist’s personal characteristics with their unique color schemes and geometric shapes. Although they are all abstract paintings, they are “reminiscent of the deep water, rugged mountains, clear valleys, and red sun of his hometown Uljin, North Gyeongsang,” as Kim In-hye, curator of the exhibition, pointed out.

Admission is 3,000 won ($2.50) for adults. It includes the Deoksu Palace admission, which is 1,000 won. The palace is closed on Mondays. Go to Seoul City Hall Station, line Nos. 1 and 2, exit 10 and walk for five minutes.

MUSEE D’ORSAY

Hangaram Art Museum of Seoul Arts Center, Seocho District

To March 5: The exhibition features 130 pieces of paintings and drawings loaned by the renowned Musee d’Orsay in Paris.

One of the highlights is the world-famous painting of “The Gleaners” by Jean-Francois Millet. The viewers can see not only the masterpiece, but also Millet’s rough drawings of it, which worked as stepping-stones to the final work. Other recognized pieces visiting Seoul include “The Siesta” by Vincent Van Gogh, which is paying its first visit to a non-European nation in decades, “Breton Peasant Women” by Paul Gauguin, and “Girls at the Piano” by Pierre Auguste Renoir.”

Tickets for adults are 13,000 won. The gallery closes on the Monday of the last week of each month (Nov. 28, Dec. 26, Feb. 27). Go to Nambu Bus Terminal station, line No. 3, exit No. 5 and walk 10 minutes.

FORNASETTI: PRACTICAL MADNESS

Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Jung District

To Mar. 19: An exhibition that sums up the diverse art works of renowned Italian artist and designer Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) is being presented at the DDP, personally curated by the late artist’s son, Barnaba Fornasetti, who is also an artist.

About 1,300 objects, a tenth of the artist’s works that he had conceived and built over the course of his life are on display, including variations of his signature design - the face of Italian opera singer Lina Cavellieri.

Tickets cost 15,000 won for adults. The venue is closed on Monday. DDP is located on Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station, line Nos. 2, 4 and 5.
