Major shake-up imminent at Korea Football Association

The Korea Football Association is likely to conduct a personnel reshuffle this week amid growing calls for change sparked by the national team’s poor performance in recent matches, an official at the organization said Friday.

The sport’s governing body in Korea is expected to make an executive reshuffle as its president, Chung Mong-gyu, had pledged last month, the official said.

During a press conference, Chung apologized for the national team’s recent slump and a corruption scandal within the organization. He promised to come up with a restructuring plan.

Chung is reportedly considering forming a new executive group mainly targeting vice presidents.

On Thursday, Kim Ho-gon, a vice president who led the football association’s technical committee, tendered his resignation.

Kim was responsible for signing Shin Tae-yong as head coach of the men’s team in July. Under Shin’s watch, the team has yet to collect a win.

Kim’s exit leaves four vice presidents: former technical committee chief Lee Yong-soo; current competitions committee head Cho Byung-deuk; Incheon Football Association President Jung Tae-jun and former Seoul Sports Council Vice President Shim Tae-hyung.

Sources said Chung could replace the executives with “young and talented” people.

Ryan Feierabend signs $1.05 million contract with KT Wiz

The KT Wiz said Friday that they have signed American pitcher Ryan Feierabend for another year.

The club said Feierabend, 32, will return on a one-year deal worth $1.05 million, up $370,000 from his current salary.

Feierabend went 8-10 with a league-best 3.04 ERA in 26 games. He became the first player to win an individual honor with the KT Wiz since the Suwon-based club entered the KBO in 2015.

“Feierabend is a player who executed the ace role very well,” said Im Jong-taek, general manager of the KT Wiz. “He is continuously improving, and we expect him to have a good season next year.”

Feierabend made his KBO debut with the Nexen Heroes in 2015 and joined the KT Wiz midway through the 2016 season. He ended that year at 7-13 with a 4.45 ERA in 31 starts.

Before coming to Korea, the southpaw played for the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers in Major League Baseball.
