Major earthquake hits Pohang, CSAT delayed

A 5.4- magnitude earthquake shook the city of Pohang in North Gyeongsang Wednesday afternoon, the second strongest ever for Korea, followed within hours by a 4.6-magnitude aftershock.

수요일 오후 규모 5.4 지진이 경북 포항을 강타했다. 한국에선 사상 두 번째로 강한 지진이었다. 몇 시간 후에 규모 4.6 여진이 발생했다.
The Ministry of Education announced that the CSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test), originally scheduled to take place today, will be delayed one week.

교육부는 오늘 시행하기로 예정된 수능시험을 일주일 연기한다고 발표했다.
“A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hit a point some 9 kilometers [5.6 miles] north of Buk District in Pohang at 2:29 p.m.,” said the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). “A 4.6-magnitude quake hit a point 8 kilometers north of Buk District at 4:49 p.m.”

Aftershocks ranging from 2.5 to 4.6 magnitudes followed, and more are expected for months, according to the KMA. Authorities said seven people were injured as of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The fire department received a total of 7,032 reports by people who felt the tremors, of which 2,016 were in North Gyeongsang, 1,205 in Seoul and 669 in Daegu. Central Seoul is located some 270 kilometers from Pohang.

North Gyeongsang is home to twelve of Korea’s 24 nuclear power plants. All were operating normally as of 4 p.m. “We are remaining alert to shut down plants if there are any signs of danger,” said a spokesperson for the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company, the largest electric power company.

한국의 24개 원자력발전소 가운데 12개가 경북에 위치해 있다. 오후 4시 현재 모두 정상 가동하고 있었다. 최대 전력생산회사인 한국수력원자력 대변인은 “만약 위험 신호가 있으면 원전 가동을 중단하기 위해 비상대기 상태를 유지하고 있다”고 말했다.
The strongest earthquake to have hit Korea was a 5.8-magnitude quake that hit Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, on Sept. 12, 2016. The quake in Pohang took place some 8 kilometers under the ground. The quake in Gyeongju took place 15 kilometers below the surface.
한국에서 발생한 사상 최대 지진은 2016년 9월12일 경북 경주에서 발생한 규모 5.8 지진이었다. 포항 지진은 지하 8킬로미터 지점에서 발생했다. 경주 지진은 지하 15킬로미터 지점에서 발생했다.
