Posco has been developing various corporate social responsibility activities since its foundation in 1968, including Sharing Saturday, a monthly event where employees volunteer at welfare facilities. The executives visit Pohang, North Gyeongsang, and affiliate businesses in Gwangyang, South Jeolla, and the Gyeongin region monthly for pro-bono activities. They help the businesses look for solutions to management issues and provide advice on special topics.

Supporting Community Chest.

Posco donated 10 billion won ($9.3 million) to the Community Chest of Korea on Dec. 11, 2 billion won more than it did last year. Posco has been a partner in the annual charity since 1999 and donated 2 billion won when an earthquake hit Pohang last month. Company executives are active in volunteering to assist in earthquake damage restoration.

It takes a village

Posco Steel Village is a project devoted to providing the safest and strongest structures to local villages. Using steel, the company creates houses, steel playgrounds and steel bridges. The project is Posco’s most well-known corporate social responsibility activity and fulfils the needs of society as well as reflecting the strengths of the company. Posco Steel Village received “SMART” certification from the UN.

Posco Steel Village provided houses, steel playgrounds and steel bridges for 104 families in Vung Tau province, Vietnam. It began with the Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial government’s request for residential facilities for low-income families.

The government provided the site for the village and the Posco 1% Sharing Foundation donated construction fees.

A place to play indoors

In May, the Posco 1% Sharing Foundation constructed a child welfare facility named Donggurang Steel Land and donated it to the Dong district office in Incheon. Constructed using Posco materials and technology, Donggurang Steel Land provides a safe place for children to play.

Fulfilling UN goals

Posco’s Steel Village Project was selected a best practice for the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and acquired a SMART certification. Posco CEO Kwon Oh-joon said, “Posco will carry out social contribution activities to help realize a better world in the best way we know how. As a global corporate citizen, we will fulfill our social responsibilities by aligning our goals with those of the UN SDGs.”
