Fake fur made to look as close to the real thing has lost its appeal in favor of eye-popping and colorful designs that trendsetters proudly wear to make both a fashion and an ethical statement. JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, took a close look at how fake fur items have become must-haves this season.

Taking a stand

On Dec. 15, American fashion brand Michael Kors announced that it will go fur-free in the upcoming year. Major fashion brands such as Giorgio Armani and Gucci have also announced fur-free commitments in the past year.

Fashion outlet Women’s Wear Daily reported that John Idol, CEO of Michael Kors, said that the brand will gradually decrease its production of genuine fur items throughout 2018.

With the growing trend across the industry, going fur-free has become significant trend in the global fashion industry.

The current fake fur trend first starting appearing on runways in the winter of 2014, and by last year, almost every major design house presented fake fur items in its winter collections. The fur-free announcements by influential brands prove that this movement is more than just a trend.

Fake fur designer Kim Jin-seon of brand Anc 1.5 has notice that the atmosphere in the fashion world has changed regarding the material. “Only about two to three years ago, I had to explain what fake fur is made of. But now customers recognize the fake.”

Brands that specialize in fake fur, like molliolli and rabbitti, have settled in the fashion industry as well. Choi Eun-kyeong of rabbitti said, “The industry has become more competitive than ever as more brands have been launched, and profits have increased.”

In fact, Hyundai Department Store has opened up pop-ups of three fake-fur brands this winter, and has recorded about 70 million won ($65,280) of revenue for each brand.

Brand Bluefit released fake fur outerwear for the first time this year and more than 90 percent of their supply is already sold out.

Real or fake?

Why is fake fur so popular? Many point to the fact that people are starting to become more aware about how they can consume products ethically. People have started to take a stand against buying and wearing fur items produced in cruel ways. In particular, it has become risky for celebrities to stand in front of cameras while wearing fur. Model Lee Hyun-yi said, “Nowadays when we go to public events, we even have to tell the press ‘This is made of fake fur.’”

However, fake fur items are not popular solely because buying them is considered ethical. Many items themselves are high in quality and looks luxurious. It is different from the past, when fake fur was made of synthetic materials, which resulted in low-quality designs.

Kwak Young-ah of fake fur brand Wonder Style said, “The difference between fake fur and genuine fur is hard to tell even to the touch, so customers usually distinguish them at the department store by the price tag.”

She added “Instead, the strength of fake fur is that it can be colorful and the design, too, can be very creative because the manufacturing process isn’t that complicated [compared to genuine fur].”

Thankfully for these designers, the idea that fake fur is always cheap slowly going away. As a matter of fact, fake fur items are not quite cheap these days.

In the past, jackets made with artificial fur cost between 50,000 won and 100,000 won, but nowadays they cost between 200,000 won and 300,000 won on average and can even cost up to 500,000 won.

Kim Jin-seon of Anc 1.5 said, “These days customers do not care whether the product is made of fake fur or not, only if the quality is good and looks pretty.”

A versatile look

Above all, fake fur goes well with many of the season’s trend.

People who have generally hesitated to wear genuine fur in the past, because it make them look too ostentatious, have now warmed up to the idea of having fake fur be a part of their wardrobe.

People are now eagerly picking up stylish fake fur items because the items themselves are fancy enough to be eye-catching without being too gaudy.

Fashion stylist Seo Su-kyeong said, “In the past, fake fur that mimicked genuine fur with dark colors and refined designs was popular but now fake fur that is clearly artificial with strong color and sophisticated designs is more preferred.”

As fake fur became popular, overall fur market has become younger. Items that could be worn casually in everyday lives are more appreciated than those can be used once a year for very special occasions. Labels have released blouses, hoodies, blazers and neck warmers made out of fake fur, and the items have been seen on the hottest trendsetters throughout the season.
