The start of a new year is a great time for planning ahead, and keen travelers should take note of Korea’s new travel policies. In 2018 employees who have worked for a company for less than one year will receive annual vacation, a privilege that wasn’t always guaranteed. In February, the government will launch a new foreign security team that will take care of incidents that happen during overseas trips. In February and March during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games the government will encourage domestic travel with a two-week long event called “Winter Travel Week.”

Pilgrimage to PyeongChang

The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games will be held from Feb. 9 to March 18. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has designated the duration of the games as the “Month of Travelling in Pyeongchang,” and will be holding the “Winter Travel Week” to encourage tourists to visit Gangwon.

The travel week has been held twice every year since 2014 by the Culture Ministry and the Korea Tourism Organization to promote domestic travel. Tourists can take advantage of discounted prices at attractions, accommodation and restaurants around the country.

Vacation allocation

Prior to this year, employees with less than a year of experience at a company often received no vacation time. That will change in June this year, when new hires will receive 11 vacation days, increasing to 15 days in their second year. Before the new law, new hires had to dip into their second year allocation if they wanted to go on holiday.

Overseas assistance

More than 26 million people traveled abroad in 2017. As the number of people heading overseas increases, complaints are mounting that the government doesn’t have a system in place to effectively help travelers who face issues while abroad.

To combat the issue the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be creating a foreign traveler’s security center from late February. The center will handle all incidents dealing with Koreans traveling overseas. The name has not been decided yet.

Name change

While it has always been possible to change the name in a passport, from March new regulations will allow people to freely change their English name on their passport as well. In the past only romanized Korean names where the pronunciation strayed too far from the original could be changed.

If you think your name could mean something a little negative in English, such as gang or sin, now is the chance to change it. But be careful, as you only get one chance to do so.

Recreation sans libation

From April this year, a number of inner-city parks, including Seoul Forest in eastern Seoul, Namsan Park and Naksan Park in central Seoul, and Yeouido Park in western Seoul, will be alcohol-free zones - or to be precise, they will become free from drunk people who often disturb others with loud noises and inappropriate behavior.

After a trial period from March, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will take measures to stop selling alcohol at 22 parks in Seoul, and will be fining drunk people a maximum of 100,000 won ($94) for disturbing others. Rest at ease, because drinking altogether hasn’t been banned, and you can always enjoy a can of beer with your chicken as long as you remain calm.

Smooth sailing

The ferries between Incheon and nearby islands will be running for free on national holidays starting this year. During Chuseok and New Year, visitors from all over the country will be able to take a ride on the ferries for free, and also during the five days before and after the holidays.

Residents of Incheon will also get their rides at a discounted price of 80 percent on other days. Other prices have been lowered as well, so a round-trip ticket to Baekryeong Island, the furthest island, which used to cost 53,200 won will now cost 26,600 won. Also, from October, those who take the Incheon subway or bus will be able to get a discounted price on taxis.
