[앵커브리핑] '돌아온 장고… 부활을 위한 몸부림' (“Return of Django… Desperate attempt for resurrection”)

그는 다시 변호인을 불러들였습니다. 오랜 시간 사법부를 부정하던 그가, 자신이 고용한 변호인도, 국선변호인도 모두 내친 그가 이제 와 다시 자신의 심복인 변호인을 불러들인 이유는 무엇인가.

After a long time denying the judiciary branch, refusing to see her hired lawyers or the public defender, she finally relented and met with her lawyer. One may wonder what changed to have her call back her henchman.

좀 번거롭더라도 얘기는 약 40년 전으로 거슬러 올라갑니다.

The story goes back to about 40 years ago.

1979년 10.26 이후 주인 잃은 청와대 출처 모를 '뭉칫돈'이 발견됐습니다.

After the Blue House lost its leader on Oct. 26, 1979 when then-President Park Chung Hee was assassinated, wads of money, whose origin was unknown, were discovered.

그로부터 10년이 지난 1989년 검찰이 발표한 5공 비리 수사 결과에 따르면 전두환 씨는 청와대 금고에 있던 9억 6000만 원 가운데 전직 대통령의 딸에게 6억 1000만 원을 전달하고 영수증까지 받았다고 하지요.

10 years after the discovery, in 1989, state prosecutors announced the result of their investigation into illegal activities of former President Chun Doo Hwan. Prosecutors said that Chun gave the former president’s daughter, Park Geun-hye, 610 million won of the 960 million won discovered in the Blue house vault. Chun even received a receipt from the daughter after delivering the money.

그렇다면 돈을 받은 사람은 당시를 어떻게 기억하고 있을까.

So how does the person who received this money remember this incident?

"박정희 대통령이 쓰다 남은 돈이다… 생계비로 쓰라고 전해줘서 감사하게 받아 나왔다" (2007년 7월 19일)

“It’s the money that former President Park (Chung Hee) left. Chun Doo Hwan gave it to me to take care of my living expenses, so I accepted it with grace.” (July 19, 2007)

지금의 가치로 따진다면, 많게는 300억까지 추정되는 이른바 '생계비'… 그는 후일 대선 토론에서도 이렇게 말했습니다.

Converted in today’s value, the gift would be worth 30 billion won. While campaigning to be president in Dec. 4, 2012, these were her words:

"경황이 없어서 받은 돈… 사회 환원하겠다" (2012년 12월 4일)

“It’s money I received because I had been so tied up with the matters at hand at the time… I will return it to society.” (Dec. 4, 2012)

어쩌면 그 뭉칫돈을 받아 청와대를 나온 그 순간부터 공화국의 비극은 시작된 것은 아니었을까.

Maybe this country’s tragedy began with the moment that she received the heaps of money and exited the Blue House.

기 치료비, 미용 시술비, 의상비, 대포폰비, 심지어 수족의 휴가비로까지 사용된 돈의 액수를 합치면 36억 5000만 원이었습니다.

The total expenses for energy therapy, beauty treatment, clothes, phones, and even vacation costs for her aides add up to 3.65 billion won.

옷 가게에 걸린 봄옷의 가격표를 만지작거리고 사과 한 알을 장바구니에 넣었다가 내려놓기를 반복하고 아이에게 사줄 책값조차 망설이며 살아온 시민들이 한 푼, 두 푼 모아서 만들어낸 세금이었습니다.

This is the accumulated taxes of the citizens who lingered by store windows, hoping to buy spring clothes and books for their children, but hesitated after looking at the price tags.

그동안 재판부를 무시하며 꿈쩍도 하지 않았던 그는 환수 움직임이 본격화되는 지금에서야 떠났던 변호사를 다시 불러들였다 하니…

After ignoring the judicial branch all this time, she now brings in her lawyer as the movements of redemption hit their stride.

다시 사법체계로 돌아온 이유가 정말 그 때문이라면 여전히 그는 그 돈에 대해서 대통령이 마땅히 써야 할, 오직 국가를 위한 비용이라고 여기고 있는 것일까.

If she did come back just for that reason, then does she still think that money belongs to her and does she still believe that the money was spent justifiably for the betterment of the country?

중국 명나라의 재상 장거정은 어린 나이에 왕위를 물려받은 만력제에게 간언했습니다. 귀담아듣지 않았던 왕은 결국 백성을 외면했고… 나라의 멸망을 재촉하게 되지요.

Grand Secretary Zhang Juzheng of the late Ming Dynasty implored to the young emperor. However the emperor didn’t listen to his advice and turned his back on his people, speeding up the dynasty’s downfall.

그리고 21세기의 이 땅에서 데자뷰처럼 진행됐던 일들…

And now, in the 21st century, everything that has happened seems like déjà vu.

그래서 결국 돌아온 변호인 앞에 놓인 것들은 기 치료비, 미용 시술비, 의상비, 대포폰비… 항목도 요상했던 현란한 명세서들입니다.

So what’s on the plate for the returned lawyer to clear up is the bizarre and abnormal purchase list of his client’s: the expenses of energy therapy, beauty treatment, clothes, phones…
