Yang Ik-june says he loves directing because it’s ‘a pain’

Yang said that he was “extremely busy,” but made time for an interview with the JoongAng Sunday, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to give advice to the young people who look up to him. Below are edited excerpts.

A. It was 10, 20 times harder than being on other entertainment shows. I had to not just be on the show, but actually write and shoot a movie and the work load was really big. The producer for the movie was actually one of the staff members for “Breathless.” I like the creative process [while shooting], but one of the big reasons for making the film is because I want to work with such good friends. It’s so fun while we’re on set.
Which do you like best, acting or directing?
I think the one I learned later, [directing] is more attractive. Directing is, frankly, just a pain in the ass. But strangely, that’s the fun part. We’re all in it together, so it’s more fun to have a harder obstacle to tackle together. I’m the one to get inspirations on my own in a quiet place. I record all the stupid fantasies and funny ideas. Then I like to tell that to my friends and laugh over this and that.
What’s so charming about indie movies?
I think indie movies are a spirit, the will to tell one’s story - not a genre. People keep thinking it’s a special genre, like melodrama or action. To be specific, [people who make] indie films are those who think from the opposite side, have an affinity for disobedience and just jump right into the stuff that needs it.
Many people look up to you. What advice do you have for them?
If you don’t have experience, you just have to try even if it’s all over the place. When you do do something, you have to try so hard that you’re willing to burn up one of your internal organs. You can’t just let it flow like a leaf falling from the trees, just because it’s a short movie. You have to be sincere with every single piece of work, and it has to sink deep inside of yourself. Besides, it costs a lot with every movie. And it’s really helpful to broaden your perspective and visit international short film festivals.

“독립영화, 장르 아닌 자기 이야기하려는 정신”
영화감독 겸 배우 양익준(42·사진)은 2005년 첫 단편영화를 찍고 4년 만에 강렬한 수작 ‘똥파리’를 선보였다. 독립영화계의 성공 사례로 여겨지는 양 감독은 지난해 4월부터 최근까지 국내외 영화·드라마 다섯 편에 배우로 출연하고 있다. 사이사이 예능 프로그램에도 출연한다. “정신없이 바쁘다”던 그는 ‘독립영화 만드는 청년들에게 조언을 해 달라’는 말에 한달음에 달려왔다. 21일 서울 성북동의 한 카페에서 만난 그의 말투는 꾸밈 없이 거칠었다.
JTBC ‘전체관람가’를 통해 오랜만에 단편영화를 찍었다.
“다른 예능 프로그램에 비해 열 배, 스무 배 힘들었다. 출연만 하는 게 아니라 연출, 영화 납품까지 해야 하니 보통 일이 아니더라.‘똥파리’ 때 제작부였던 친구가 이번 단편에서 PD를 했다. 창작도 좋지만 이런 좋은 친구들하고 작업하고 싶어 영화를 만든다. 일할 때 서로 즐겁고 신난다.”
연기와 연출 중 어느 쪽이 더 끌리나.
“늦게 배운 게(연출) 아무래도 끌린다. 연출은 말 그대로 ‘개고생’이다. 그런데 이상하게 재밌다. 좋은 친구들하고 같이 고생하니까 이겨내는 맛도 있다. 혼자 조용한 데서 영감을 채취하는 타입이다. 망상 같은 말도 안 되는 이야기들, 재밌는 생각들을 기록한다. 그걸 친구들하고 얘기하면서 낄낄거리는 게 좋다. 백날 영화란 어떻고 저떻고 이야기하면 피곤해서 못 산다.”
상업영화와 다른 독립영화만의 매력이 뭔가.
“내 생각에 독립영화는 자기 이야기를 하려는 의지, 하나의 스피릿(정신)이지 어떤 장르가 아니다. 자꾸 멜로, 액션 같은 특별한 장르처럼 본다. 굳이 말하자면 거꾸로 생각하고, 반골 기질이 있고, 부딪쳐야 될 거에 몸으로 부딪치는 이야기를 하는 사람들이다. 내가 만든 영화도 내 안과 주변의 이야기를 표현하는 방법이었다.”
양익준을 따라 하고 싶어 하는 이가 많아졌다.
“경험치가 없을 땐 엉망진창 일단 해보는 거다. 대신 간이든 쓸개든 뭐 하나 태울 각오로 만들어야 한다. 단편영화라고 낙엽 떨어지듯 흘려 버리면 안 된다. 한 작품 한 작품 진심으로 만들고 나에게 확실한 기록이 돼야 한다. 하나 찍을 때마다 돈도 많이 들어가잖아. 국제 단편영화제에 많이 가보는 것도 시야를 넓히는 데 도움이 된다.”
누구나 성공하는 건 아니다. 정말 하고 싶은데 재능이 없으면 어떡하나.
“어려운 문제다. 어릴 때 같으면 ‘한번 더 해 봐’ 했겠지만 지금 제 입장에선 끊는 훈련도 필요하다고 말하고 싶다. 연애랑 비슷하다. 정말 영화가 하고 싶다면 그 안에 감독뿐 아니라 다양한 길이 많이 있다. 어차피 흘러가는 시간이다. 즐겁게 경험했다면 후회만 안 하면 된다.”
