Unknown actors remain passionate about work : While stars get the fame, others labor just to make ends meet

At the same time, an actor who had been working as an extra for 26 years named Choi Kyo-shik was introduced to the public for the first time after he was chosen to be the presenter of the grand prize at the 2017 MBC Drama Awards.
JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, interviewed three relatively unknown actors about their dreams for 2018. Although they aren’t famous, their passion for their careers is certainly as earnest and enthusiastic as any superstar.

Actor Ryu Gyeong-hyeon will never forget the words he heard in 2013: “Ryu, it’s the assistant director of the film ‘Ode to My Father,’ calling to let you know that we are ‘fixed.’” To Ryu, who had failed dozens of auditions because of his heavy regional dialect, the film “Ode to My Father” was like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day.
“At first, I didn’t know what ‘fixed’ meant, because I’d never heard that phrase before,” Ryu recalled. “The director said again, ‘Let’s do this together,’ and I was so overjoyed that I was jumping up and down.” It was his first proper role in a movie.
The name of his part was “Gobbiri 2,” a Korean slang word for a high school student. His character mocks a foreign laborer in the film, saying, “This is why the country is in poverty.”
After the part, he was cast in the JTBC drama “Strong Woman Do Bong-soon,” the SBS series “While You Were Sleeping” and the tvN drama “Because This is My First Life.” He has played the role of a Chinese delivery guy and the main character’s co-worker, among others.
“One time, I played the role of a high school student who had to act really surprised every time actress Shin Min-a appeared because of her stunning beauty on the KBS drama ‘Oh My Venus,’” Ryu said.
“But I was actually dumbfounded every time she appeared because she was so beautiful. The director laughed at my response and asked me, ‘What’s the matter?’ but I couldn’t say any-thing.”
Ryu is currently known as a level six actor. Actors receive payment based on their level and years of experience in the industry. Level six is the lowest level, and Ryu has quite a ladder to climb if he wants to reach the top - level 18. Although he is hopeful, it isn’t an easy way to earn a living. But Ryu believes that if he loses his dream, he would lose everything. Although he works three times a week as a valet at a hospital, he practices reading scripts at least two times a week with other aspirants. He also writes scripts with colleagues and shoots short films to submit to agencies for auditions.
“If someone asks if the life of an anonymous actor is hard, I wouldn’t deny it,” he said. “But I want to experience more, regardless of how small or big the role is, and become a strong and dependable actor, hardened on the outside but with innate skills.”
Almost famous
Actress Kim Ha-young is “That person from the TV show ‘Surprise.’” Kim has been the main actress on the MBC TV show series “Mystic TV: Surprise” for 14 years now, but she has never been identified by her name in public. Instead, she has various nicknames such as “Yongin Folk Village Jang Geum” or “Surprise Show’s Kim Tae-hee.”
“I debuted on the show in August 2004, and spent all of my youth with the show,” Kim said. “Although people might not know my real name, I am still surprised by how many people recognize my face.”
She graduated from an arts high school and majored in drama and cinema. She auditioned to be a TV entertainer, but didn’t pass the test. While she was preparing for an entrance exam to become a voice actor at the broadcast company MBC, she was asked to star in the “Surprise” series. She has been steadily walking the same path for years now.
She is a chameleon on the show, playing all kinds of characters, from a royal concubine to a ghost. She is the longest-serving cast member on the show.
Although Kim may be the show’s leading actress, the job is not nearly enough for her to earn a living. She appears in a number of educational videos which simulate how to greet customers and prevent sexual harassment, and her other jobs include being an MC for corporate events, cable channels, and other shows. “Acting is always fun no matter how hard it is, but when I can’t earn money because there isn’t anything for me to do, that’s always hard,” Kim said.
Nevertheless, she is always passionate about her job. “I would be lying if I said I don’t want to star in movies or dramas,” Kim said. “But since my image is so closely associated with ‘Surprise’, I don’t have many opportunities. I think it’s because if I show up, people would think, ‘Isn’t that the actor from the Surprise series?’”
The filming for “Surprise” always has a tight schedule. The crew films scenes two days a week and airs the episode a week after they are filmed. Filming for the show is always done in a short period of time.
“I have to cry right on cue, without having enough time to gather my emotions during the sad scenes,” she said. “But this year I have a feeling that I’ll be given more chances to show people a deeper set of emotions.”
When asked if she wants to continue her role on the show, she replied, “If they let me, I’ll do it until I’m old enough to come out in the show as an old lady without wearing a wig.”
Movie fan jumps to the screen
When asked why he wants to act, rookie actor Kim Si-ho says, “Meeting people who love movies as much as or more than I do - that itself can turn pain into joy.”
Kim first fell in love with movies after he watched “Reservoir Dogs” (1992) by director Quentin Tarantino when he was in high school. He was fascinated by how the film was not limited by a time or context. After directing plays for a while, he began acting three years ago.
His works include the films “Man of Will” (2017), “Daddy You, Daughter Me” (2017), and “Swing Kids” (2017). Most recently he appeared in the film “1987: When the Day Comes.”
In “1987,” when Lee Han-yeol, played by actor Gang Dong-won, gathers newcomers for the school’s comic club and tries to show a clip about the May 18 Gwangju uprising, one student asks, “What’s this movie about?” The student is Kim.
That was his first line in a commercial film. Coincidentally, Kim graduated from Yonsei University and majored in sociology. “I remember when I was a student, photos of the student activist Lee Han-yeol were hung in the school library every June to commemorate him. I’m just so proud to be part of such a movie.”
When Kim is not on screen, he works part-time jobs to make ends meet. “I do physical labor such as stage installation or delivering packages,” he said. He has no choice but to work at temporary jobs because he has to be available for auditions.
“Even if we do not make something good, expensive or up-to-date, if people can feel the sincerity in the work, than something amazing will come out of that work.” This line of dialogue from Kim’s role in director Yang Ik-june’s short film “Lalala,” which aired on the JTBC show “Rated G,” also reflects Kim’s thinking.
If he can pour his heart into his acting, he believes that one day he can become a great actor.
“I practice my pronunciation and intonation every day and go to group studies for acting. I try to look inside my mind and face my thoughts by turning out the lights in my room and practicing monologues.”
When asked about what kind of actor he wants to be, he replied, “I want to become an actor who doesn’t just stand still. I want to challenge myself, be disappointed, laugh if I’m happy and cry when I’m sad. Without any regard for fame, if I am never satisfied with my current status and continue to improve, then doesn’t that make me a successful actor?”

A system that excludes some
In TV entertainment, actors are rated into different levels to set up a standard for payment. The lowest level which is level six, receives maximum 440,000 won per 70-minute-long episode in a mini series. Level seven receives maximum of 510,000 won, and level eight receives 600,000 won. The highest rate is level 18, which receives 1.85 million won. Levels one to five are for child actors. The payment per episode is the same regardless of how many hours they film for the series. The actor has to provide 30 percent of his or her income as a commission for the casting director who pairs up the actor and the drama series for an audition.
Star actors receive payments based on their contracts instead of the standards set by the rating system. The levels that actors receive are based on their experience and the importance of the role they play, and are adjusted in their contracts. The ones who suffer most from the rating sys-tem are “non-rated” actors. The chances of such actors to land on a proper role are much slim-mer than profiled actors. Since there are no previous works for the casting directors to refer to, they have to do their own legwork for auditions and get the roles on their own.
[사람 속으로] 후궁부터 처녀귀신까지 다 해봤다 ‘서프라이즈의 김태희’
적지 않은 배우가 주목 받은 2017년이었다. 고생 끝에 낙이 온 진선규, 관록을 보여줬던 나문희, 언제나처럼 인정받았던 송강호…. 반면 MBC 연기대상 시상자로 선정된 후에야 이름 석 자가 불린 무명배우 최교식 같은 이들도 있다. 열의만큼은 톱스타 못지 않은 배우 세 사람에게 2018년의 꿈 얘기를 들었다. 간절하고 뜨거웠다.
겉은 딴딴, 안은 향기 나는 배우
“경현씨, 국제시장 조감독이에요. 우리 ‘픽스’됐어요.” 배우 류경현(28)은 2013년 들은 이 말을 잊지 못한다. 표준말이 서툰 경남 토박이라 숱하게 오디션에서 떨어진 그에게 영화 ‘국제시장’은 한줄기 단비였다. 류씨는 “뭘 정했다는 건지, 처음 들어본 말이라 무슨 의미인지 몰랐다”며 “다시 ‘우리 같이 해요’라고 하길래 길바닥에서 방방 뛰었다”고 말했다. ‘국제시장’은 류씨가 배역을 맡아 출연한 첫 작품이다. 배역 이름은 ‘고삐리2’. 대사는 “(외국인 노동자를 조롱하며) 저래 하이 까네 나라가 못 살지”였다.
이후로 JTBC ‘힘쎈 여자 도봉순’, SBS ‘당신이 잠든 사이에’, tvN ‘이번 생은 처음이라’ 등에 출연했다. 단역으로 중국집 배달원도 됐다가, 고정 역할로 주인공 회사 동료도 됐다. 재밌는 경험도 많다. 류씨는 “KBS ‘오 마이 비너스’ 때 신민아 선배가 나타나면 미모에 놀라는 연기를 해야했는데 실제로 너무 예뻐서 멍하게 있었다”며 “감독님이 황당한 듯 웃으면서 ‘왜 그러냐’고 하는데 아무 말도 못 했다”고 말했다.
그는 현재 6등급 배우다. 사람에겐 등급이 없지만 배우는 등급이 있다. 등급을 기준으로 방송 출연료가 나온다. 6등급은 가장 낮은 등급. 최고 등급인 18등급까지는 까마득하다. 꿈만 갖고 이어가기에 쉬운 생활도 아니다. 하지만 꿈마저 놓으면 류씨는 다 잃는다고 생각한다. 일주일에 세 번 대형병원에서 주차장 출차 일을 하면서도 일주일에 두 번 이상 연습실에 나가 다른 지망생과 대본 리딩을 하는 이유다. 동료와 함께 쓴 시나리오로 단편 영화를 찍어 곳곳에 출품도 한다.
류씨는 “누군가 물고기에 대해 물으면 보통 물에 살고, 아가미가 있다고 설명하겠지만 나는 비록 물고기라도 그 내면을 들여다보는 배우가 되고 싶다”며 “더 부딪치면서 겉은 딴딴하고 안은 향기 나는 배우가 되고 싶다”고 말했다.
가발 안 쓰고 할머니 연기 할 때까지
배우 김하영(39)은 ‘서프라이즈 그 애’다. 올해로 14년 간 MBC ‘신비한 TV 서프라이즈’(이하 ‘서프라이즈’)에 출연하고 있지만 대중에게 ‘김하영’으로 불린 적은 거의 없다. 그저 ‘걔’라거나 ‘용인민속촌 장금이’ 혹은 ‘서프라이즈 김태희’ 정도다. 김씨는 “2004년 8월 서프라이즈로 데뷔해 청춘을 함께 보냈다”며 “이름은 몰라도 알아봐 주시는 분들이 많아 매번 놀란다”고 말했다.
그는 예고와 대학 영화학과를 졸업, 탤런트 공채 시험에도 도전했지만 안 됐다. MBC 성우 시험을 보던 중 제안을 받아 ‘서프라이즈’ 배우가 됐다. 이후는 ‘외길’ 인생이다. ‘서프라이즈’에서 중국·일본·부탄 등 온갖 아시아인을, 양귀비나 조선 왕조 후궁에서 처녀귀신까지를 연기했다. ‘서프라이즈’ 배우 중 최고참이기도 하다.
이 프로에선 멜로 연기가 가능한 거의 독보적인 여배우로 활약중이지만 이것만으로는 생활이 안 된다. 고객 응대 요령, 성희롱 예방 등 각종 교육 영상 속 배우나 기업 행사의 MC, 케이블 채널 방송 등 가리지 않고 일하는 이유다. 김씨는 “연기는 아무리 힘들 때도 재밌는데 일이 없어 돈 못 벌 때는 정말 힘들다”며 웃었다.
연기 욕심은 누구 못지않다. 그는 “영화나 드라마 욕심이 없다면 거짓말인데 서프라이즈 이미지가 강하다 보니 기회가 생기지 않는다”며 “내가 나오면 ‘서프라이즈 걔 아냐?’하며 흐름에 방해가 될까 봐 그러는 것 같다”고 말했다. 일주일 중 이틀 촬영해 그 다음 주 내보내는 촉박한 일정 때문에 ‘서프라이즈’ 촬영 현장은 늘 호흡이 짧다. 김씨는 “슬픈 장면에서 감정 잡을 시간도 없이 ‘큐’ 하면 바로 울어야 한다”며 “올해는 긴 호흡으로 내면을 더 끌어내 보여줄 기회가 분명 올거라 생각한다”고 말했다.
그에게 ‘서프라이즈’를 계속 할거냐고 묻자 “시켜주는 한 할머니 역을 가발 안 쓰고 할 때까지 하고 싶다”고 답했다. 그리곤 조심스레 말했다. “저희 보고 재연 배우라고 하시는데요, 사실 모든 연기가 상황에 대한 재연인 것 같아요. 그래서 재연 배우라고 하실 때 조금 힘이 빠지기도 해요. 재연 배우 말고, 그냥 배우라고 불러주시면 안 될까요?(웃음)”
그 자리에 마냥 서있지 않는 연기자
“영화를 사랑하는 사람과 만날 수 있다는 것, 이것 하나로도 고통이 즐거움이 됩니다.” 연기 경력 3년, 새내기에 속하는 배우 김시호(32)는 왜 연기를 하려느냐는 물음에 이같이 답했다. 그는 영화 애호가다. 고교 시절 본 쿠엔틴 타란티노 감독의 ‘저수지의 개들’은 시간 순서에 구애받지 않고 맥락을 파괴하며 이야기를 이어갔고 김씨는 영화의 매력에 흠뻑 빠졌다. 연극 연출을 거쳐 3년 전 본격적으로 영화에 뛰어들었다.
출연작을 꼽자면 영화 ‘대장 김창수’, ‘아빠는 딸’, ‘스윙키즈’ 등. 가장 최근에는 ‘1987’에 나왔다. 강동원이 만화 동아리에 신입생을 모아 5·18 광주민주화운동 영상을 보여주려 하자 “이거 무슨 영화예요?”라고 묻는 학생이 바로 그다. 그에게는 이 말이 상업영화에서 맡은 인생 첫 대사다. 마침 연세대 사회학과를 나온 그는 “매년 6월이면 학교 중앙도서관에 이한열 열사 사진이 걸린다. ‘1987’에 참여했다는 것만으로도 벅차올랐다”고 했다.
김씨는 촬영이 없을 때 아르바이트로 생활비를 번다. “주로 공연 무대 설치와 소위 말하는 막노동이나 택배 상·하차 일을 한다”고 말했다. 일용직에 가까운 이런 일자리를 찾는 건 언제 오디션 공고가 뜰지 몰라서다.
“진심만 들어가면 좋은 거 비싼 거 최신 이런 거 안 써도 죽이는 게 나온다는 거지.” 최근 JTBC 예능 ‘전체관람가’를 통해 완성된 양익준 감독의 단편영화 ’라라라‘에서 김씨가 ‘시호’ 역을 맡은 한 대사다. 그의 생각도 같다. 진심만 담을 수 있다면 언젠가 명배우가 되리라 믿는다. 그는 “매일 발음·발성 연습을 하고, 연기 스터디에도 나간다. 수시로 방에 불을 끈 채 마음대로 독백하며 내면을 마주하려 한다”고 말했다.
어떤 배우가 되고 싶냐는 질문엔 이렇게 말했다. “도전하고 좌절하고 기쁘면 웃고 슬프면 울다가도 그 자리에 마냥 서 있지 않는 배우가 되고 싶어요. 떴느냐 안 떴느냐를 떠나 ‘이 정도면 됐다’고 생각하지 않는 배우면 이미 성공한 게 아닐까요?”
[S BOX] 아역보다 못한 무등급, 오디션 봐서 배역 따야
방송 연기자에게 적용되는 등급제는 출연료 지급을 위한 기준이다. 최하위인 6등급은 70분 미니시리즈에 출연 시 회당 44만원 안팎을 받는다. 7등급은 51만원 안팎, 8등급은 60만원 안팎으로 올라간다. 최고 등급인 18등급은 185만원 안팎이다. 1~5등급은 아역 등급이다. 회당 출연료는 몇 시간을 촬영하든 똑같다. 섭외를 중개해주는 캐스팅 디렉터에게 출연료 30% 정도를 소개비로 낸다. 스타 배우는 따로 계약해 등급제와 무관하게 출연료를 받는다. 등급은 경력, 배역의 비중 등을 고려해 계약 과정에서 상향 조정된다. 가장 힘든 건 ‘무등급’ 배우다. 조금이라도 더 비중있는 배역 맡기가 힘들다. ‘캐스팅 디렉터’가 참고할 만한 이전 작품의 영상이 없어 최대한 발품을 팔고 오디션을 봐 배역을 따내야 한다.
