Friends help each other shine on stage : How a musical actor got his friend to join cast of ‘Kinky Boots’

Kim is known to have a strong presence, especially when it comes to fashion, while Lee is known to be a more private person who doesn’t often show off his personality when he appears on entertainment programs on TV. The two met while serving in the military, became friends and have gone through some big moments together. Kim was the emcee at Lee’s wedding, and introduced an interior design company to Lee when he wanted to move into a new studio. Lee will run out to support Kim whenever possible, be it a flea market or any other kind of event. Their relationship has also expanded to the professional sphere. Kim was a major influence behind Lee taking up the role in the musical, since Lee had rejected many offers that came his way before.
“I have always thought musical is the ultimate collection of the arts, as you have to do everything well: singing, dancing and acting,” said Lee.
“I thought that I’m not very outstanding so I said no, but this time I didn’t want to miss my chance.”
Lee said he learned more about the musical when Kim was in it two years ago. After Lee received the offer, he talked with Kim, who encouraged him to take it.

“There are things a singer should do to bring out emotion in the song, although they are not the vocally correct thing to do. But musicals follow strict rules,” said Lee. “It is difficult to lose what’s been memorized in my body, and this feels like 10 years ago, when I first started singing.”
However, Kim, who considers himself Lee’s full-time trainer, sees talent. Kim said he was shocked at the musical’s first table read, as Lee managed to make the lines sound like real-life conversations - a skill that many novice actors don’t have.
“I am especially sensitive when it comes to people reading lines. If someone doesn’t do it correctly, I go crazy, but Lee knew how to do it from the beginning. From that point, I started to think that Lee could even do a play or a movie.”
Kim, a veteran in the industry, has been fighting to re-brand himself as an actor. He is known for being a male actor who plays female roles, but in fact, he has played many different characters. When he played a female character in 2014, images of him in costume spread on social media and that’s how people remember him, according to Kim.
“I have done many roles that bring out the more macho side of men,” said Kim, adding that he is a chameleon who can work a variety of different charms.
When he auditioned for the role of Charlie in “Kinky Boots,” the critics at the audition seemed confused. He recalled that they seemed to be confused why he was there.
“At one point I thought there was a prejudice against me in the entertainment world, and they seem to easily think that I can’t do certain roles,” said Kim.
“I thought that by playing a normal character in a musical that so prominently features Lola, a man playing a woman, I would give people a shock. So as soon as I got the role, I bought a plain shirt and pants and wore them every day so that I could assure people that I can do this role well.”
The two friends and performers sat down with the JoongAng Sunday, an affiliate of Korea JoongAng Daily, to discuss some of their struggles. The following are edited excerpts.

A. Lee: I have never thought of myself as a celebrity. When someone tells me they are a fan and asks for a signature, I feel so embarrassed, hide myself [behind a corner,] and then do it. I’m still very shy, so I have to [push myself] to do things. I’m still trying to change that and overcome it, but I hope, on the first day of the musical, when my character Charlie overcomes [his struggles] and sings his song, then maybe I can be like that as well. I’m studying scenes one by one, and when I get to the last scene, I will have to overcome that challenge.
Kim: I agree. These traits are very much like Charlie. After all, this musical will be a story of Lee growing up.
Kim, is it difficult for you not to play the character of Lola?
Kim: Of course it is. I needed some time to change myself. I was so stressed when I was practicing two years ago. Even if I was doing the same act, people would say I was exaggerating or that it looked like too much. This piece talks about prejudice, but the people working with me had a prejudice against me. I wanted to show them how I could transform myself into an icon of taking on a challenge and succeeding. (Tears up) Thinking about those times makes me cry. I still remember how nervous I was at the first performance. I was crying my eyes out on the last day of the performance. I was so thankful that so many people ended up believing in me. This musical means a lot to me.
Do you think that you two are like Charlie and Lola in the musical, who work to make up for each other’s shortages?
Kim: Yes. I have been doing plays since high school and I was shocked when I saw Lee. I have been working to look like I’m alive, but Lee is just the definition of being alive [without trying so hard.] The sense of something raw really inspires me, because I sometimes fall into the same habits.
Lee: When I watch Kim perform, I start to build on my own thinking [about the role]. I was surprised to see the flow of the entire story when I only saw him doing just one scene. So what’s important is how you work with your partner. It feels weird to say this with Kim right next to me, but it would have been really hard if he wasn’t here.

완벽한 사람은 없다. 누구나 빈틈이 있고, 드러내기 힘든 상처를 하나쯤 품고 살아간다. 그게 나쁜 것만은 아니다. 다른 누군가를 만나 서로 빈틈을 채워주고 상처를 치유해주는 게 사람 사는 맛 아닌가. 뮤지컬 ‘킹키부츠’(31일~4월 1일 블루스퀘어 인터파크홀)는 각자의 트라우마를 가진 찰리와 롤라, 달라도 너무 다른 두 친구가 서로를 통해 ‘진정한 나’를 찾는 훈훈한 성장드라마다.
뮤지컬 ‘킹키부츠’ 주연 김호영·이석훈
찰리 역을 나눠 맡은 김호영(35)과 이석훈(34)도 그런 사이다. 17년 차 뮤지컬 배우지만 여장남자 ‘캐릭터 배우’ 이미지가 강한 김호영에게도, 처음으로 뮤지컬에 도전하는 ‘SG워너비’ 이석훈에게도, 찰리 역은 특별하다. 마치 찰리와 롤라처럼 상반된 캐릭터의 두 사람은 서로의 빈틈을 메우며 ‘하나의 찰리’를 어떻게 만들어가고 있을까.
‘좀 노는 오빠’ 김호영과 모범생 이미지의 이석훈은 언뜻 물과 기름 같다. 그런데 군 동기로 만난 두 사람은 김호영에 의하면 “내가 결혼식 사회를 봐 준 정도? 석훈씨 작업실 옮길 때 내가 인테리어 업체를 소개해 주고, 내가 바자회를 열면 석훈씨가 득달같이 달려오는 정도”의 절친이다. 잠시 지켜본 바로는 뮤지컬이 아직 낯선 이석훈을 베테랑 김호영이 살뜰히 챙겨주는 분위기다. 점심시간을 쪼개 만나 “식욕이 없다”는 석훈에게 호영이 “그래도 좀 먹어둬야 한다”며 주문해준 음식을 석훈은 맛있게 먹어치우는 식이다.
석훈이 ‘킹키부츠’ 출연을 결심하게 된 것도 호영의 영향을 무시할 수 없다. ‘킹키’ 이전엔 숱한 제안을 다 고사해 온 터였다. “종합예술의 끝은 뮤지컬이라 늘 생각해왔거든요. 너무 멋있지 않나요. 노래와 춤, 연기를 다 잘해야 되니까요. 저는 그렇게 뛰어난 사람이 아니라 생각해서 고사해 왔는데, 이번만큼은 놓치기 싫었어요. 재작년 형 공연할 때 진짜 좋은 작품이란 걸 알았고, 제안이 왔길래 형에게 물어보니 제게 딱 맞는 캐릭터라고 추천해 주더군요.”(이)
“찰리를 해본 사람으로서 잘 어울린다고 판단해준 정도죠. 우리가 30대 중반 넘어가는 시점에 이제 뭔가 스스로 넘어서야 되는 변화의 타이밍이란 얘기를 석훈에게 한 적도 있는데, 석훈도 은연중에 뭔가 새로운 걸 해봐야겠다는 모험심이 발동한 것 같아요.”(김)
질의 :첫 뮤지컬 도전이니 연기가 힘들겠죠.
응답 :이: 처음엔 그랬죠. 뮤직비디오 연기도 해본 적 없거든요. 근데 지금은 노래가 더 어려워요.
김: 저는 ‘연기가 장기’라고 얘기하지만 알면 알수록 힘든 게 연기거든요. 석훈은 가수로서 자신 있었지만 새로운 장르의 노래를 접하며 새삼 느끼는 부분이 있을 거예요.
이: 실용음악은 사실 하지 말라는 걸 하면 좋아하거든요. 발성적으로 정답은 아니라도 표현의 맛을 내기 위해 가수로서 해야 할 부분이 있는데, 뮤지컬은 정석대로 가야 하죠. 몸에 배인 걸 빼는 작업이 노래를 처음 시작하던 10년 전의 나를 찾는 과정이기도 해서 어려워요. 음악감독님이 처음 제게 하신 말씀이 “가수 이석훈이 무대에서 안 보여야 된다”는 건데, 할수록 그게 너무 와 닿아요. 열심히 노력하는 중입니다.
‘프로듀스101’에서 ‘워너원’을 길러낸 매서운 보컬트레이너는 간데없고 “아직 부족하다”를 반복하는 석훈이지만, ‘석훈 전담 트레이너’ 호영이 보기엔 타고난 재능이 있단다. “첫 리딩부터 솔찮이 놀랐다”는 것. “연기를 처음 해보는 사람들은 말을 말 같지 않게 하는 게 보통이거든요. 특히 저는 대사에 민감해서 남이 대사를 정확하게 하지 않으면 거슬려서 경기를 하는 스타일인데, 석훈은 처음부터 ‘말’을 할 줄 알더군요. 저 정도로 되는 애라면 연극이나 영화도 할 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었어요.”(김)
“형이 헤매는 과정을 엄청 줄여줬어요. 뮤지컬만의 문법이나 디테일이 있잖아요. 제일 놀랐던 게 노래 부르며 계단 올라가는 장면이 있는데, 걸음에도 박자가 있다는 걸 몰랐어요. 제리 미첼 연출도 얘기 안 해준 걸 형이 다 알려줬죠.”(이)
“가수에겐 노래가, 배우에겐 연기가 가장 어려워”
김호영에겐 ‘여장 전문배우’ 꼬리표가 붙곤 하지만, 사실 17년간 다양한 역할을 골고루 해왔다. 2014년 ‘프리실라’ ‘라카지’에서 드랙퀸 역할을 연이어 맡았을 때 이미지가 때마침 SNS 열풍을 타고 급속도로 확산됐다는 것이 자체적인 분석이다. “사실 상남자 역할도 여럿 해봤죠. 군에서는 훈련소가 철원 백골부대라는 무시무시한 곳이었는데, 사실 군대문화에 정신적으로 잘 적응이 안 됐어요. 그럼에도 퇴소식에서는 제가 대표 낭독을 했죠. 오디션에서 가장 박력있고 남자답다고 뽑힌 건데, 군인 역할 연기라고 생각하고 잘해냈어요.”(김)
평범한 청년 찰리 역으로 오디션을 볼 때도 본인은 어색함이 없었다. 오히려 심사위원들이 어색해하며 ‘얘가 여길 왜 왔나’는 얼굴이었지만, “그게 노림수였다”는 게 그의 말이다.
“어느 날 문득 공연계에 저에 대한 편견이 있다는 걸 느꼈어요. 못해서 안 하는 게 아닌데 ‘쟤는 못 할거야’ 단정짓더군요. 뭔가 보여줘야겠다 싶었는데, 여장남자 ‘롤라’가 있는 ‘킹키부츠’에서 평범한 찰리를 하면 신선한 충격을 주지 않을까 싶었죠. 합격하자마자 평범한 셔츠와 면바지를 사서 이미지 메이킹을 시작했어요. 같이 하는 사람들에게 믿음을 주기 위한 노력이었죠. 어느 날 안무감독에게 ‘호영아, 너 너무 찰리같애’라는 말을 들었을 때 비로소 안심이 됐어요.”(김)
질의 :하다보면 롤라와 동화되는 어려움은 없었나요.
응답 :이: (박장대소) 맨날 참고 있어요. 안타까워 죽겠어요 아주~.
김: 있었죠. 변신에 시간이 필요했어요. 재작년 연습 때는 스트레스 엄청 받았어요. 같은 액션을 해도 과해 보인다고 하니까. 고정관념에 대해 이야기하는 작품인데 정작 같이하는 사람들이 나에게 고정관념을 가진 거죠. 어쨌든 공연으로 보여주겠다, 고정관념과 편견의 아이콘인 내가 도전과 성공의 아이콘으로 거듭나겠다고 했어요.(눈시울 붉히며) 그때 생각하니 눈물이 나네. 아직도 첫공날 긴장감을 잊지 못해요. 막공 때는 대성통곡을 했어요. 많은 우려에도 믿어준 게 감사했던 거죠. 저에게 큰 의미가 있는 공연이에요.
질의 :석훈씨도 이번 도전을 통해 스스로 거듭나는 면이 있겠죠.
응답 :이: 한 번도 스스로 연예인이라 생각한 적이 없거든요. 누가 내 팬이라고 사인해달라면 창피해서 숨어서 해주곤 했죠. 지금도 여전히 소극적인 성격이라 좀 억지로 하는 면이 있어요. 아직은 노력 중이고 극복한 건 아닌데, 아마 첫 공연날 엔딩에 찰리가 다 극복하고 노래 부를땐 저도 그렇지 않을까요. 씬별로 공부해 가고 있으니, 마지막 씬에 가면 극복해 있겠죠.
김: 그런 게 찰리와 굉장히 닮았어요. 결국 이석훈의 성장스토리가 될 거예요, 진짜로.
질의 :두 분도 찰리와 롤라처럼 극과 극에서 빈틈 메워주는 사이 같아요.
응답 :김: 맞아요. 저는 고등학생 때부터 연극을 해왔지만 석훈을 보면 충격적이에요. 저는 살아있는 것처럼 보이기 위한 메소드를 했다면, 얘는 그 자체로 살아있달까. 날것의 느낌으로 매너리즘에 빠진 나를 똑똑 두드려주고 있죠.
이: 형을 보면 연기에 대한 제 나름의 생각이 생겨요. 한 장면을 해도 스토리 흐름이 보이는 게 신기했는데, 중요한 건 상대방과의 호흡이더군요. 옆에 있으니 말하기 뭐하지만, 형이 없었으면 힘들었을 거예요.
