DISNEY IN CONCERT

Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Theater

May 19-20: Singers will come together in Seoul to sing everyone’s favorite Disney songs and depict magical movie moments on stage. While clips from the films play on screen, the audience will get to enjoy the singers playing out the scenes on stage as well. The program includes songs from Disney classics such as “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Lion King,” and “Frozen.”

The Ditto Orchestra will be performing the music for the concert.

The concert will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Ticket prices range from 30,000 to 100,000 won.

PIANIST JI, “I AM NOT THE SAME”

Seoul Arts Center, Concert Hall

Feb. 24: Pianist Ji is one of the few Korean artists at Warner Music Group and was recently featured in the “Android: Monotune” advertisement. In the ad, he tunes a piano to play only one note, and uses it along with another piano to play Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.”

At this show, he will start off with Bach’s “Goldberg Variation, BMV 988 Aria” and other classical pieces.

The concert starts at 7 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 30,000 to 70,000 won ($27.90 to $65.10).

ENCORE WHEESUNG REALSLOW CONCERT

Feb. 28: To thank his fans who supported his successful five-city tour last year, singer Wheesung will perform an encore concert and wrap up his current concert series while also celebrating the new year with his fans.

THE AMAZONS LIVE IN SEOUL

March 3: English rock band The Amazons is coming to Seoul for its first ever concert in Korea. Formed in 2014, the band is composed of Matt Thomson, Chris Alderton, Elliot Briggs and Joe Emmett. They were included on the BBC’s “Sound of 2017” and MTV’s “Brand New 2017” lists. During the Seoul concert, the band will play their songs “Stay With Me,” “Black Magic,” and “Nightdriving.”

The concert starts at 6 p.m.

All tickets are 77,000 won.

JOHN LEGEND, DARKNESS AND LIGHT TOUR

Olympic Park, Olympic Hall

March 15: John Legend, the R&B and soul musician, is returning to Korea. Since his first Korean performance in 2009, the artist has not only held three of his own concerts, but he has also attended various Korean music events such as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, showing his immense popularity in the country.

Since his debut album “Get Lifted” in 2004, the artist has won 10 Grammy Awards. He jumped to the world of film with his role in the 2016 movie “La La Land” and his duet with singer Ariana Grande for the soundtrack of “Beauty and the Beast” (2017).

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

MURRAY PERAHIA PIANO RECITAL

March 17: International pianist Murray Perahia will come to Korea as part of his world tour which kicked off last May. The program includes Bach’s “French Suite No.6 in E major, BWV 817,” Schubert’s “Vier Impromptus D. 935 (Op. post.142),” Mozart’s “Rondo in A minor, K. 511,” and Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Op. 110.”

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

KOH SANGJI SPECIAL CONCERT

March 17: Koh Sangji plays the bandoneon, an accordion-like instrument that is essential when playing tango music. She was taught by Japanese bandoneon player Komatsu Ryota. The concert is divided into two volumes, the first under the theme of “Gorgeous Violin, Sensitive Tango,” and second with the title of “Baroque Music - Bach, Telemann and Piazzolla.”

The concert will start at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR “LAND OF GOLD”

March 22: Popular sitar player Anoushka Shankar will be coming to Korea for the first time in March. Widely known for her captivating music which mixes traditional and contemporary culture, and sounds from the East and the West, she has been nominated for six Grammys.

At the concert, she will perform songs from her 2016 album “Land of Gold.” Shankar wrote the songs on the album as a way to channel her feelings after hearing about dark news events happening all over the world, such as civil wars and refugees, and offers messages of hope and consolation to those suffering from discrimination, poverty, repression and injustice. Shankar has continuously voiced her opinions through various human rights movements.

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

Ticket prices range from 40,000 to 100,000 won.

April 6: Katy Perry’s world tour, “Witness: The Tour” comes to Seoul in April. According to the organizer, the tour is “an imaginative trip from outer-space to inner-space, from the planets to the bottom of our oceans, and a musical journey through Perry’s biggest milestones and mega-hits right up to her latest album.”

The concert starts at 9 p.m.

Tickets range from 99,000 to 165,000 won and standing tickets cost 110,000 won.

To Feb. 25: To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Seoul Arts Center’s Opera house, “Anna Karenina” - with its original production that was originally performed by the Moscow Operetta Theatre - will be staged.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. for Wednesdays. On Saturdays, the musical starts at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. while it begins at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. There are no shows on Mondays.

Ticket prices range from 60,000 to 140,000 won.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO MUSICAL

Feb. 27 to May 7: A Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1958, “Doctor Zhivago” is Boris Pasternak’s only novel. His work has been adapted into a film and a number of musicals.

A production was introduced to Asia for the first time with actors Jo Seung-woo and Hong Kwang-ho in 2012, and this time the main character Yuri Zhivago will be played by actors Ryu Jung-han and Park Eun-tae.

The show tells the tale of lovers, Yuri Zhivago and Lala, who embark on a heartbreaking love story during the Russia revolution.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the weekends and national holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

AMADEUS

Feb. 27 to April 29: From the mind of British playwright Peter Shaffer, the musical tells the tale of composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Although similar in sense about their thirst for music, Mozart’s ingenuity and talent torments the palace composer Salieri. The role of Mozart will be played by two veteran TV actors: Cho Jung-seok and Kim Jae-wook. This show will be Kim’s first performance in a musical in seven years.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. There are no shows on Mondays. On March 1 there will only be one show at 3 p.m. and on Sundays from March 2 to 18, the show will only be hosted at 2 p.m.

SWAN LAKE

March 29-31: Jimmy is a 36-year-old depressed man with no job and no hope who lives alone with his mother.

When the government takes away his childhood home as part of their public management policy, he is traumatized and goes to a nearby lake with a gun, planning to kill himself.

Before he pulls the trigger, four swans appear before him: They are Finola and her younger sisters, all of whom have been cursed and turned into swans. When Jimmy starts dancing with the four swans, he feels a happiness that he’s never felt before.

The overall story is based on the classic ballet “Swan Lake,” but the four sisters who were cursed into swans are part of the Irish myth “The Children of Lir.” Jimmy’s character and his background come from the “John Carthy Case” which shook up Irish society in 2000.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on the weekdays and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

SEOUL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

Olympic Park

May 19-20: The Seoul Jazz Festival is returning to Olympic Park for the 12th time this year. The festival features a variety of local and foreign talent for audiences to enjoy. This year’s lineup includes Lauryn Hill, pictured above, Maceo Parker, Epik High, Lucid Fall Trio, Lee Hi, Loyle Carner, Khruangbin and The Seoul Rebels on the first day. Branford Marsalis Quartet, Jessie J, PREP, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Heize and Richard Parkers will take the stage on the second day. The timetable for the artist performance will later be announced on the website.

Ticket prices are 155,000 won for a one-day ticket and 240,000 won for a two-day ticket.

2018 WORLD DJ FESTIVAL

Jamsil Sports Complex Olympic Stadium

May 26-27: Korea’s largest annual EDM Festival is back this year with a fresh line-up: The first day features artists Peter Robinson, Kungs and Black Tiger Sex Machine, and the second day has Wildstylez, Zatox, Atmozfears and MC Villain set to hit the stage. More artists will be added to the line-up throughout the spring and early-bird tickets are now on sale at the festival’s official website, www.wdjfest.com.Performance schedules will be uploaded online in April.

The festival begins at 2 p.m. on both days.

Ticket prices are 139,000 won for a one-day ticket and 199,000 won for a two-day ticket.
