Chinese foreign policy adviser to visit the Souths

A Chinese senior foreign policy adviser is expected to visit South Korea this month to discuss issues of mutual concern, including North Korea’s nuclear problem, a diplomatic source said Thursday.

A discussion is under way to arrange Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi’s visit to South Korea, the source said, adding it could take place after the closing of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s legislature, which is scheduled for March 20.

During his stay, Yang will likely meet high-ranking South Korean officials, including Chung Eui-yong, head of the National Security Office, and Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.

His trip to South Korea would come amid a sense of rapprochement here. South and North Korea recently agreed to hold what would be the third summit late in April and establish a hotline between their leaders. The North also expressed its willingness to talk with the United States regarding the denuclearization of the peninsula.

China earlier voiced its support for the outcome of the recent visit by President Moon Jae-in’s special envoys to Pyongyang where they met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
