(0306) “JTBC’s relationship with Samsung…”

This is today’s anchor briefing.

I have unintentionally given an anchor briefing twice on a major conglomerate, specifically on the relationship of Samsung Group and the media.

Today’s (March 6) anchor briefing also unintentionally touches upon my previous anchor briefings.

I will explain why at the end.

Two years ago, in July 2016, the hottest issue that the public was focused on was the allegation that Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee purchased sex.

The general public directed their attention to see whether JTBC would report on the issue.

Of course, JTBC reported it.

On the anchor briefing aired on July 25, 2016, I stated that we were not concerned about the power of certain corporations or individuals.

Also, I mentioned that infringement on press freedom by a powerful conglomerate is not justifiable. I’ve also mentioned that Samsung was facing that very accusation.

The second anchor briefing on Samsung was aired on March 20, 2017.

The two anchor briefings were our answers to questions we had thought about for a long time.

In the past few years, most people thought that JTBC was in a special relationship with Samsung. When we reported on Samsung’s problems or openly criticized political power, it is not true that we did not have any concerns to worry about. Instead, we had to endure the unexpected backlash. These lines were what I said in the two previous anchor briefings.

‘It may sound like trite, textbook remarks, but in the end such agonized considerations will rescue journalists from frustration,’ I recall I said so gingerly at the time.

As is already known, even the president at that time tried to put pressure on the head of Samsung Group to change JTBC Newsroom’s reporting.

However, the results were as we have observed …

Neither the head of the conglomerate nor the conglomerate itself is not in a position to put pressure on us.

While reporting on the Me Too movement these past few days, we heard of a conspiracy theory that we were revealing Me Too cases intentionally to cover up Samsung’s flaws.

The conspiracy suggested that JTBC, along with the three nationwide broadcasters, did not report on the three owner siblings of Samsung Group, who gained enormous margins when Cheil Industries, an affiliate of Samsung Group, was listed in the stock market. The conspiracy theory suspects that JTBC and three TV broadcasters were lobbied by Samsung to be quiet on the issue.

Another suggestion was that JTBC did not report on the messages that show the relationship between the press and Chang Choong-ki, the former president of the Future Strategy Office of Samsung.

The conspiracy theory argues that instead, JTBC broke the news of the sexual assault accusations of An Hee-jung, the former governor of South Chungcheong.

JTBC had already aired the problems of Cheil Industries three times and said that they were related to the issue of Samsung’s succession.

* succession: 승계, 연속

The other broadcasting stations that didn’t air this news should reflect on why they did not report on the issue.

There is no need to drag JTBC into that category.

That also goes for the incident regarding the text messages showing the close relationship between former Samsung official Chang Choong-ki, the media, and the state agencies.

We have already covered this issue more than five times.

In addition, we exclusively reported that prosecutors are launching investigations into Chairman Lee Kun-hee’s borrowed-name bank accounts.

These re-emerging issues may be seen as a process of harboring suspicion towards Samsung’s past actions and its tight relationship with the media. However, JTBC has no reason to be in that category. It is hard to understand the idea behind the conspiracy theory regarding the Me Too movement.

Once again, I would like to cite the last part of the anchor briefing from March 20 of last year.

We do not exist for the purpose of a particular individual or organization.

Even though society changes, the universally agreed textbook characterization of journalism is correct. True journalism does not exist for the purpose of a particular individual or organization;.

Including myself or anyone else working for JTBC

We are proud that we have worked hard to protect true journalism, which we pursue no matter what.

We might not be able to pursue it because of the lack of our capacity. However, there is no chance of us changing our minds and not pursuing our original definition of true journalism.

This is all for today’s anchor briefing.
