OK JOO HYUN CONCERT “VOKAL”

March 17-18:
This concert’s title, “Vokal,” is a combination of the word vocal and the Ok Joo Hyun’s surname Ok. The member of 90’s girl group Fin.K.L is still an active vocalist and a renowned musical actor. At this concert, the singer will perform with a live orchestra under the production of the director Kim Mun-jung. The program includes classic pieces from her various musical performances and will also accept song requests from the audience through Ok’s agency Potluck’s official social media.

The concert starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Ticket prices range from 77,000 to 132,000 won ($72 to $124).

KOH SANG-JI SPECIAL CONCERT

March 17:
Koh Sang-ji plays the bandoneon, an accordion-like instrument that is essential when playing tango music. She was taught by Japanese bandoneon player Komatsu Ryota. The concert is divided into two volumes, the first under the theme of “Gorgeous Violin, Sensitive Tango,” and second with the title of “Baroque Music - Bach, Telemann and Piazzolla.”

The concert will start at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

ANOUSHKA SHANKAR “LAND OF GOLD”

March 22:
Popular sitar player Anoushka Shankar will be coming to Korea for the first time in March. Widely known for her captivating music which mixes traditional and contemporary culture, and sounds from the East and the West, she has been nominated for six Grammys.

At the concert, she will perform songs from her 2016 album “Land of Gold.” Shankar wrote the songs on the album as a way to channel her feelings after hearing about dark news events happening all over the world, such as civil wars and refugees, and offers messages of hope and consolation to those suffering from discrimination, poverty, repression and injustice. Shankar has continuously voiced her opinions through various human rights movements.

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

INSOONI 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR CONCERT

The relationship between this duo is special: Ever since Jian Wang saw Kim perform at the 2010 Great Mountains Music Festival & School, the two have kept in touch and have been working together. At this concert, the duo will perform Schubert’s “Arpeggione Sonata,” Chopin’s “Cello Sonata,” and Rachmaninov’s “Cello Sonata,” with no assistance from other instruments.

LES VENTS FRANCAIS: DREAM TEAM OF WINDS!

April 17: Les Vents Francais, an ensemble of top wind instrumentalists, will perform in Korea for the first time. The program includes Mikhail Glinka Trio’s “Pathetique for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano in D minor,” Ludwig Thuille’s “Sextet in B flat Op. 6 for piano and wind quintet,” Jacques Ibert’s “3 Pieces Breves for wind quintet,” Darius Milhaud’s “Sonata for flute, oboe, clarinet, and piano Op.47” and Francis Poulenc’s “Sextet FP100.”

The concert starts at 8 p.m.

DISNEY IN CONCERT

May 19-20:
Singers will come together in Seoul to sing everyone’s favorite Disney songs and depict magical movie moments on stage. While clips from the films play on screen, the audience will get to enjoy the singers playing out the scenes on stage as well. The program includes songs from Disney classics such as “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Lion King” and “Frozen.”

The Ditto Orchestra will be performing the music for the concert.

The concert will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

FUENSANTA LA MONETA “DIVINO AMOR HUMANO”

March 24-25:
In “Divino Amor Humano,” Teresa of Avila’s four poems about divinity, love and passion will be transformed into a stage show full of dance and flamenco-style violin and electric guitar.

With the help of lighting effects and projections, contemporary flamenco dancer Fuensanta La Moneta will express the work spectacularly with her dramatic movements and deep understanding of the arts.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday.

SWAN LAKE

March 29-31:
Jimmy is a 36-year-old depressed man with no job and no hope who lives alone with his mother.

When the government takes away his childhood home as part of their public management policy, he is traumatized and goes to a nearby lake with a gun, planning to kill himself.

Before he pulls the trigger, four swans appear before him: They are Finola and her younger sisters, all of whom have been cursed and turned into swans. When Jimmy starts dancing with the four swans, he feels a happiness that he’s never felt before.

The overall story is based on the classic ballet “Swan Lake,” but the four sisters who were cursed into swans are part of the Irish myth “The Children of Lir.” Jimmy’s character and his background come from the “John Carthy Case” which shook up Irish society in 2000.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on the weekdays and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

KINKY BOOTS

Charlie Price inherits a shoe factory from his father, but faces financial difficulties. To save his precarious shoe business, he unwillingly strikes a deal with a drag performer named Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots for other drag queens called “kinky boots.”

Talented singers and actors star in the musical, including Kim Ho-young, Lee Seok-hoon from SG Wannabe, Jung Sung-hwa and Kim Ji-woo.

In the spring of 1866, the Korean Peninsula is in chaos due to international power politics. In the midst of the chaos, Empress Myeongseong marries King Gojong and gives birth to a healthy prince. Known for her beauty and intelligence, she was loved by her people. However, wanting to conquer Asia through the Korean Peninsula, the government of Meiji Japan decides the empress is an obstacle to their expansion of power and begins to plan her assassination.

AMADEUS

From the mind of British playwright Peter Shaffer, the musical tells the tale of composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Although similar in sense about their thirst for music, Mozart’s ingenuity and talent torments the palace composer Salieri.

The role of Mozart will be played by two veteran TV actors: Cho Jung-seok and Kim Jae-wook. This show will be Kim’s first performance in a musical in seven years.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and national holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO MUSICAL

A Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1958, “Doctor Zhivago” is Boris Pasternak’s only novel. His work has been adapted into a film and a number of musicals.

A production was introduced to Asia for the first time with actors Jo Seung-woo and Hong Kwang-ho in 2012, and this time the main character Yuri Zhivago will be played by actors Ryu Jung-han and Park Eun-tae.

The show tells the tale of lovers, Yuri Zhivago and Lala, who embark on a heartbreaking love story during the Russian Revolution.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. for the weekends and national holidays.

SEOUL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

May 19-20:
The Seoul Jazz Festival is returning to Olympic Park for the 12th time this year. The festival features a variety of local and foreign talent for audiences to enjoy. This year’s lineup includes Lauryn Hill, pictured above, Maceo Parker, Epik High, Lucid Fall Trio, Lee Hi, Loyle Carner, Khruangbin and The Seoul Rebels on the first day. Branford Marsalis Quartet, Jessie J, PREP, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Heize and Richard Parkers will take the stage on the second day. The timetable for the artist performance will later be announced on the website.

Ticket prices are 155,000 won for a one-day ticket and 240,000 won for a two-day ticket.

2018 WORLD DJ FESTIVAL

Jamsil Sports Complex, Olympic Stadium

May 26-27:
Korea’s largest annual EDM Festival is back this year with a fresh line-up: The first day features artists Porter Robinson, Kungs and Black Tiger Sex Machine, and the second day has Wildstylez, Zatox, Atmozfears and MC Villain set to hit the stage. More artists will be added to the line-up throughout the spring and early bird tickets are now on sale at the festival’s official website, www.wdjfest.com.

Performance schedules will be uploaded online in April.

The festival begins at 2 p.m. on both days.

Ticket prices are 139,000 won for a one-day ticket and 199,000 won for a two-day ticket.
