If both of them plead not guilty, this will most likely reduce their sentences.

그러나…한 사람은 순순히 자백했는데 다른 한 사람이 계속 부인한다면 자백한 사람은 풀어주고 부인한 사람의 형량은 그만큼 더 무거워질 것이다.

However… if one confesses, while the other continues to deny, the confessed will be released. The person who refuses to confess will receive a heavier punishment.

용의 선상에 오른 그들은 어떤 방법을 택할까…

Which option will these suspects choose?

둘 다 입을 꾹 다문다면 죄는 은폐될 수도 있겠지만, 서로는 서로를 믿지 못해서 결국 둘 다 자백하는 경우가 대부분이라는 사실.

If both plead not guilty, their crime could stay concealed. However, in most cases, both end up confessing their crimes because of the lack of trust between them.

범죄를 공모한 것이 맞다면 상대방이 배신하지 않을 것이라는 신뢰는 애초부터 존재하지 않는다는 것이 이른바 '죄수의 딜레마'라는 수사기법이 통할 수 있는 토양이지요.

If the two parties did indeed collude in a crime, there is no trust between them from the very beginning. The two parties do not trust each other and in the end, will betray each other. That is the grounds for investigators to employ the prisoner’s dilemma technique.

This desperation might have caused them to pursue their own survival.

생각해보면 이 죄수의 딜레마에는 분명한 전제가 있습니다.
If you think carefully about it, the premise for this prisoner’s dilemma is clear-cut.

의로움을 함께한 이들이라면 각자도생할 필요는 없다는 것.

If they had acted together in the cause of justice, there would have been no need to betray each other from the beginning.

부정한 공모 속에서만 죄수의 딜레마는 작동한다는 것이지요.
