Koreans opt for singing all by their lonesome

On most nights, Seong Bal-keum, a 25-year-old college student, goes to a coin-operated karaoke booth after her study group sessions in Sinchon, western Seoul, and sings about 12 songs by herself for a dirt-cheap rate of 3,000 won ($2.80).

She uses her smartphone to record herself, uploads the video to her social media account and easily gets over 1,000 hits per clip.

Hwang Jin-hyun, a 27-year-old office worker, uses coin-operated karaoke booths to relieve stress after work. His friends don’t see him very often and have come to calling him a “coin ghost.”

On days when he can’t make it to a karaoke booth - and there aren’t many - Hwang sings by himself at home and streams it live on YouTube.

It’s no secret that music has always had a special place in Koreans’ hearts, and it’s become more so in recent years with the rise of coin-operated karaoke booths.

Typical karaoke rooms operate on an hourly basis. Booths charge per song. These tight spaces accommodate one or two people, where they can sing usually at a rate of 500 won per song. Some even allow users to sing three or four songs for 1,000 won. Compared to karaoke rooms, where the cost can easily exceed 10,000 won for hour, coin-operated booths are more economical and eliminate the pressure of having to perform in front of a group.

Although the trend seems relatively new, Korea has had coin-operated karaoke booths since the early 1990s. The first known karaoke booth was inside a video game arcade called Royal Game Room in Busan. It was opened in 1991. Similar to the booths of today, people were charged 500 won per song. (The price of singing has not caught up with inflation.)

The rising popularity of group karaoke led to rooms and bars dominating neighborhood street corners, and slowly, coin-operated booths began to disappear.

But now they’re back, and with more cachet than before as Koreans are increasingly engaging in solitary activities, watching plays, eating barbecue and attending concerts alone.

“With the growing number of single-person households, a culture of enjoying music alone has also begun to proliferate,” said Yim Jin-mo, a music critic. “Especially with the Me Too movement in Korea, companies are hesitant to throw karaoke parties, which used to be a common practice, so those who used to release stress by singing at such occasions are doing it alone at coin-operated karaoke booths.”

Koreans’ love of singing alone has also generated a boom in wireless microphone sales. Many young Koreans in their 20s and 30s have begun carrying Bluetooth microphones in their bags so they can sing wherever, whenever. The devices can be connected to speakers for amplification or to smartphones for recording.

“I even saw a driver in the next lane singing inside his car with his microphone while the light was red,” said Han Eui-joon, a 35-year-old Seoul resident. “I first thought it was weird, but after trying it out in my friend’s car with his microphone connected to the speakers, I decided to get one myself. Your car turns into the perfect karaoke room.”

Sales of Bluetooth microphones in the first two months of this year soared by 1,033.09 percent compared to the same period last year on the e-commerce platform WeMakePrice.

Another solo singing trend has been the rise of recording studios open to the general public. Booths that were once reserved for professional musicians are now available to everyone.

OOTBS in Suwon, Gyeonggi, is one of the more popular open recording studios. The company says people mostly use the space to record high-quality tracks for their lovers.

And if you’re not a good singer, but happened to write a good song, you can even request a professional singer or live band to record the track at OOTBS. Afterward, a professional engineer at the studio can mix the track and export a high-fidelity audio file for customers to take home. The studio also offers classes in music composition.

For the homebody, there are plenty of smartphone apps that can help people easily compose songs or learn how to play them. One app called HumOn, which has been downloaded over 500,000 times, can generate a score based on a melody hummed into the phone. Users can even select different genres to create different sounds with the score.

Another app called Sanjo Gayageum helps users learn how to play the gayageum, a traditional Korean string instrument. Sim Ye-ri, a 23-year-old college student, said she was able to master the basics on her own using the app. “During summer break, I am planning to take real gayageum lessons,” she said.

“Music has really become closer to the general public thanks to the revival of coin-operated karaoke booths and gadgets that help people enjoy it more,” said Yim, the music critic. “Music no longer belongs to the cultural elite. Now, anyone can participate, create and enjoy music in their own ways.”
