(This is a downright lie. Everyone)

This is today’s anchor briefing.

“He is not telling a lie.”

A writer, who had several times been involved in the process of publishing an autobiography of Seoul Mayor Lee Myung-bak, who later became the president of Korea from 2008 to 2013, said so.

“They are forged documents.” “My aides have made false testimonies.” “Just proving my innocence does not seem to clear the charges against me.” Former President Lee said so.

That writer said that Lee is saying what he thinks is true, because in Lee’s point of view, he is not telling a lie.

The writer told me an anecdote when Lee served as Seoul mayor.

“Please tell us about what you failed in.”

As the publisher of Lee’s autobiography wanted to include his painful experiences of failure as well as his success stories, the writer asked Lee to talk about his failures.

However, ironically his story of failure that he told, in the end, led to another story of his success.

The writer was in an awkward position.

“If you only tell stories like this, your book will be boring.”

Although the writer tried to persuade him, Lee’s reply was something like this.

I am a person with many enemies. Once I admit my failure, I must be denied. I do not consider my failure to be a failure. A failure is also a success.

People, who heard of these words directly from Lee, said they conjured up the psychological term “retrospective memory falsification.”

*conjure up: 생각해내다

The term refers to the unconscious distortion of memories conducive for self-defense.

When reviewing Lee’s words with this perspective, things he said, such as “I do not know” and “The documents were forged” may be seen as his version of the truth.

His success story of from working as a street vendor then becoming a president of a conglomerate, and finally the president of Korea…

That is why he always emphasized that he is a person who “has done all kinds of work.”

“Since I ran a business, I know that...” - February 2011
“Since I built ships, I know that...” - April 2010
“Because I was once a flood victim, I know that...” - September 2010
“Since I worked as a street vendor when I was young…” - December 2008

Like a bulldozer equipped with a computer, he might have run forward, only looking ahead, while hiding his failures.

However, after all these illusions pass, what’s left behind for us…

Embezzling 35 billion won, Abuse of power, Taking bribes of 11 billion won in total,
Loss of national treasury, Violation of presidential records management act, Tax
evasion… 18 charges in six crime categories

It can be seen that during his time in office, he tried to manipulate our memories as well, making us accomplices of the retrospective memory falsification.

The many attempts to change public opinion through the military, the National Intelligence Service and media outlets under his influence may be evidence of the retrospective memory falsification.

Then and now, he wants to desperately shout out the following statement.

This is a downright lie. Everyone,
I have not lived such a life.
Who can dare to throw stones at me?

- Aug. 17, 2018 Lee’s speech at the Grand National Party’s primary to nominate the party’s presidential candidate
