Listening to jazz music in the park has become a popular annual spring event for Seoulites who attend the Seoul Jazz Festival every May. This year’s event takes place at Olympic Park in southern Seoul for two days starting May 19. See FESTIVAL, below. [YONHAP]

ELISABETH LEONSKAJA PIANO RECITAL

March 31: Celebrated Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja will play three of Franz Schubert’s pieces during her first piano recital in Korea. The program consists of “Piano Sonata No. 9 in B Major, D 575,” “Fantasie in C Major, D 760” and “Piano Sonata No. 18 in G Major, D 894.” Leonskaja chose this program to allow the audience a chance to experience the beauty of music.
The concert starts at 5 p.m.
Ticket prices range from 40,000 to 80,000 won ($37.20 to $74.40).

INSOONI 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR CONCERT

March 31: Insooni will host a concert to celebrate her 40th anniversary as a singer. Widely known as a first-generation diva, Insooni has dipped into various genres, from pop, ballad, dance, disco, jazz and trot, with the best of her singing ability that shows her passion for music.
The concert starts at 6 p.m.
Ticket prices range from 77,000 to 132,000 won.

SUNG MIN-JE & DANNY KOO: DUO CONCERT
April 14: Violinist Danny Koo and double bassist Sung Min-je, pictured above, will be collaborating with each other and creating harmony with the violin and the double bass. Sung is a renowned musician who has won several competitions in and out of Korea. His best achievements were winning both the International Johann Mattihias Sperger Competition for Double Bass in 2006 and the International Serge Koussevitzky in 2007. Koo has collaborated with several musicians, such as German-Canadian cellist Johannes Moser, and is currently a member of Ensemble Dittofrom 2016.
The program consists of six pieces from six famed composers: J.S. Bach, S. Rachmaninov, G. Bottesini, K. Penderecki, R. Gliere and E. Meyer.
Ticket prices are 50,000 won for each seat.

LES VENTS FRANCAIS: DREAM TEAM OF WINDS!

April 17: Les Vents Francais, an ensemble of top wind instrumentalists, will perform in Korea for the first time. The program includes Mikhail Glinka Trio’s “Pathetique for Clarinet, Bassoon, and Piano in D minor,” Ludwig Thuille’s “Sextet in B flat Op. 6 for piano and wind quintet,” Jacques Ibert’s “3 Pieces Breves for wind quintet,” Darius Milhaud’s “Sonata for flute, oboe, clarinet, and piano Op.47” and Francis Poulenc’s “Sextet FP100.”
The concert starts at 8 p.m.
Ticket prices range from 50,000 to 110,000 won.

CHO YONG-PIL 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

May 12: Legendary singer Cho Yong-pil is holding a concert in May to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his debut. Tickets to his concert opened Tuesday afternoon and only a few tickets are left as of Tuesday evening. Titled “Thanks To You,” Cho’s upcoming concert will be full of his hit songs, ranging from songs from 50 years ago like “Short Hair,” to his latest hits off of the 2013 album, “Hello.”
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets range from 55,000 to 154,000 won.

DISNEY IN CONCERT
Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Theater
May 19-20: Singers will come together in Seoul to sing everyone’s favorite Disney songs and depict magical movie moments on stage. While clips from the films play on screen, the audience will get to enjoy the singers playing out the scenes on stage as well. The program includes songs from Disney classics such as “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Lion King” and “Frozen.”
The Ditto Orchestra will be performing the music for the concert.
The concert will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

March 29-31: Jimmy is a 36-year-old depressed man with no job and no hope who lives alone with his mother. When the government takes away his childhood home as part of their public management policy, he is traumatized and goes to a nearby lake with a gun, planning to kill himself. Before he pulls the trigger, four swans appear before him: They are Finola and her younger sisters, all of whom have been cursed and turned into swans. When Jimmy starts dancing with the four swans, he feels a happiness that he’s never felt before.
The overall story is based on the classic ballet “Swan Lake,” but the four sisters who were cursed into swans are part of the Irish myth “The Children of Lir.”
The performance starts at 8 p.m. on the weekdays and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

To April 1: Charlie Price inherits a shoe factory from his father, but faces financial difficulties. To save his precarious shoe business, he unwillingly strikes a deal with a drag performer named Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots for other drag queens called “kinky boots.”
Talented singers and actors star in the musical, including Kim Ho-young, Lee Seok-hoon from SG Wannabe, Jung Sung-hwa and Kim Ji-woo.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. from Tuesdays to Fridays, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. for Saturdays and 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for Sundays and holidays.

ALONG WITH THE GODS: THE TWO WORLDS

To April 15: This highly anticipated musical adaptation of the popular webtoon series will impress both fans of the original comic and the movie adaptation as well.
The main character Jin Gi-han, a lawyer who defends the dead 39-year-old Kim Ja-hong, is played by Jo Hyung-gyun and Kim Yong-han.
In the movie, Kim Ja-hong (Cha Tae-hyun) was a firefighter who died while saving a young girl from a burning building, but in the musical Kim Ja-hong is just an ordinary salaryman. The plot focuses on how the ordinary Ja-hong undergoes seven trials for 49 days in the underworld. By emphasizing the importance of the three grim reapers, the musical shows how living along with the gods creates a fair and just world.
The performance starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The show starts at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. For the weekends, the musical starts at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays. There are no shows on Mondays.

To April 15: In the spring of 1866, the Korean Peninsula is in chaos due to international power politics. In the midst of the chaos, Empress Myeongseong marries King Gojong and gives birth to a healthy prince. Known for her beauty and intelligence, she was loved by her people. However, wanting to conquer Asia through the Korean Peninsula, the government of Meiji Japan decides the empress is an obstacle to their expansion of power and begins to plan her assassination.

To April 15: Preserving tradition while also adding creative touches may seem like an oxymoron, but the combination of pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing) and modern dance fit together surprisingly well. This 90-minute performance uses pansori to explain how the three heroes of the Three Kingdoms fight amongst each other in the war.
Performances start at 8 p.m. on weekdays excluding Mondays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays. There are no shows on Mondays.

BEAUTIFUL MINT LIFE 2018
May 12-13: This festival is known to feature rising artists like Park Won, pictured above. The biggest feature of this springtime music festival is its diverse events and booths during the performance, allowing the audience to freely interact throughout the weekend.
The concert starts at 12:40 p.m. on both days.
The reservation ticket prices are 77,000 won per day and 123,000 won for both days. Ticket prices sold on the day of the even are 85,000 won for one day and 135,000 won for both days.

SEOUL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018

May 19-20: The Seoul Jazz Festival is returning to Olympic Park for the 12th time this year. The festival features a variety of local and foreign talent for audiences to enjoy.
This year’s lineup includes Lauryn Hill, Maceo Parker, Epik High, Lucid Fall Trio, Lee Hi, Loyle Carner, Khruangbin and The Seoul Rebels on the first day. Branford Marsalis Quartet, Jessie J, PREP, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Heize and Richard Parkers will take the stage on the second day.
Ticket prices are 155,000 won for a one-day ticket and 240,000 won for a two-day ticket.

2018 WORLD DJ FESTIVAL
Jamsil Sports Complex, Olympic Stadium and Auxiliary Stadium
May 26-27: Korea’s largest annual EDM Festival is back this year with a fresh lineup: The first day features artists Porter Robinson, Kungs and Black Tiger Sex Machine, and the second day has Wildstylez, Zatox, Atmozfears and MC Villain set to hit the stage. More artists will be added to the lineup throughout the spring and early bird tickets are now on sale at the festival’s official website, www.wdjfest.com.
Performance schedules will be uploaded online in April.
The festival begins at 2 p.m. on both days.
Ticket prices are 139,000 won for a one-day ticket and 199,000 won for a two-day ticket.
