 지금으로부터 15년 전인 2003년 4월 1일 만우절. 

Fifteen years ago, on April 1, 2003,

 그는 마치 만우절 거짓말같이 우리 곁을 떠났습니다. 

he left our sides, as if it were an April Fool’s prank.

 믿기 힘든 죽음만큼이나 잊기 힘들었던 장면은 하나같이 마스크를 착용한 채 추모하던 사람들의 물결

People gathered to mourn the deceased actor, while all wearing masks. Like his death, the scene of masked mourners is extremely hard to forget.

2003년의 홍콩은 '사스'가 창궐했던 시기였고 공포에 휩싸인 사람들은 사랑하는 배우를 추모하는 그 순간에도 마스크를 벗지 못했던 무척 생경한 풍경이었지요.

In 2003, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) was rampant in Hong Kong. People were terrified by the fear of being infected and could not take off their masks, even after the death of their favorite actor. This was a very strange, unfamiliar scene.

*rampant: 걷잡을 수 없는, 만연하는  

이름부터 낯설어 더 공포스러웠던 메르스 때도 마스크는 필수품이었습니다. 

Masks were must-have items during the outbreak of MERS, which seemed to be more deadly because its name was never heard of before.

 갑자기 터진 재채기 한번에도 옆 사람의 눈치를 살펴야 했던 무서운 전염병. 

It was a fearful, infectious disease that made people become wary of others whenever they sneezed.

*wary: 경계하다

뻥 뚫린 방역과 엉성한 정부 대처를 믿지 못했던 사람들은 얇디얇은 마스크 한 장으로 각자도생, 즉 스스로를 지켜내야 했으니까요.

People, who couldn’t trust the government’s sloppy quarantine measures, chose to protect themselves with a single, thin mask.  

 그리고 지금 봄날 거리에서는 15년 전 홍콩의 거리가 무색할 만큼이나, 또 3년 전 메르스의 공포가 강타했던 그해의 늦봄만큼이나… 또 다른 공포가 우리를 지배합니다. 

The fear that took over the streets of Hong Kong during the spring 15 years ago, along with the fear of MERS three years ago… once again, fear seizes us this spring.

 그 거대한 마천루… 제2 롯데월드까지 사라지게 한 초미세먼지의 엄습입니다.

Fine dust surrounded the Lotte World Tower as if the massive skyscraper disappeared from sight.

 봄이라지만.

Despite the fact that it is spring,  

 꽃은 피어도 제 색깔을 찾지 못하고, 아이들의 연약한 살갗은 무방비로 뚫리게 되는 뿌연 침입자. flowers fail to bloom their true colors. This grey

invader enters the skin of defenseless young children.

 그렇게 초미세먼지는 주말을 관통하고, 우리의 봄을 관통하고, 이제 어쩌면 우리의 평생을 관통할지도 모릅니다. 

This is how fine dust keeps us indoors on the weekends and takes away our spring. Perhaps, it may keep doing this to us for the rest of our lives.

 그리고 우리가 손에 든 것은 또다시 달랑 마스크 하나… 

Again, the only thing that we have in our hands is a mask.

공교롭게도 3년 전…바로 그 메르스 사태로 온 국민이 공포에서 채 벗어나기도 전에 당시 대통령과 여당이 주장한 복면시위 금지법에 대해서 사람들은 냉소를 감추지 못했습니다.

Coincidentally, three years ago… while people were still panicked over the MERS outbreak, they expressed cynicism as then-President Park and the ruling party pushed to legislate a bill to strictly prohibit wearing of masks at rallies.

*cynicism: 냉소

 "국민이 IS인가" "복면가왕도 폐지해야 하나" 

“Do you think people are ISIS terrorists?”
“Do you think the TV show “The King of Mask Singer also should be shut down?”

 
메르스를 겪은 이후에도 마스크는 보건학이 아닌 정치학으로 해석되던 시절은 이제 가고… 

After experiencing MERS, masks now are no longer interpreted as a political tool but as an item for hygiene.

 이제는 얼굴을 가리기 위해서가 아니라 생존하기 위해 마스크를 들게 된 세상… 

We now live in a world where we use masks for survival, not to cover our faces.

뾰족한 대책도 별로 보이지 않는 지금… 

Even now there is no effective measure…

차라리 복면금지법이 아닌 복면착용법이라도 만들어야 하는 것일까…

 Is there a need to legislate a law enforcing wearing masks instead of prohibiting people from wearing masks?
