The Art Malling department store in Busan is hosting “Happy Culture,” an exhibition of work by the French pop artist and fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. Until May 31, visitors will be able to view some 120 works by the artist, including clothes and accessories that the artist designed himself.

Castelbajac started his career as a fashion designer in 1970, when he launched his collection and made an impression as a creative genius. Since then, he has been actively shaping the French fashion scene with unique designs, and by infusing elements of pop art into his patterns and colors. The current exhibition is the first archive exhibition of the artist-designer to be held not only in Korea, but in the world.

The exhibit is divided into three sections - “Hap,” “Happen” and “Happy.” The first begins with an archival display of the artist-designer’s works that he created for his French designer brand, Castelbajac, along with some art pieces, also by the designer. In the “Happen” section are some of Castelbajac’s collaborations with well-known pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, through which he crossed the borders of art and fashion.

In the final section, “Happy,” are some pieces that were loved by pop divas and celebrities of today, including Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Also on display is a costume worn by Ivanka Trump while she worked as a model.

“This exhibition is step forward for Castelbajac into a mega brand that creates not only fashion, but art. This is a chance to experience Castelbajac’s artistic world,” the brand said in a release. The exhibit is free to the public.

In March 2016, Castelbajac created an installation art work around the King Sejong statue in Gwanghwamun Square, central Seoul, and also gave a live painting performance on a Renault Samsung SM6 in December 2016 in Seoul. In December 2017, he created four paintings in collaboration with Naver’s Line Friends characters to sell to Korean fans. The paintings are still on display at Seoul Auction’s Print Bakery locations in Samcheong-dong and Hannam-dong, central Seoul.
