'곰팡이 꽃'의 주인공이 다시 존재한다면 그는 그 어떤 쓰레기도 뒤질 필요가 없을 것 같습니다.
If the main character from “Flowers of Mold” does exist, there is no need for him to rummage through trash anymore.
넘치는 것은 비닐과 페트병이고, 그것이 결국 우리의 일상을 지배해왔다는 것을 새삼스레 확인하는 것일 뿐.
There are tons of plastic bags and bottles, showing how plastic has dominated a great portion of our lives.
따지고 보면 석 달만 모으면 아파트 한 채를 꾸밀 수 있다는 그 다양한 쓰레기 역시 결국 가장 두려운 비닐과 페트병으로 수렴된다는 것.
Basically, the majority of the collected trash that could outfit an entire apartment unit is now plastic bags and plastic bottles.
썩지 않는 그것들은 이미 예견된 비극을 이제 눈앞의 현실로 들이밀고 있는 중이지요.
It was predicted that piles of indecomposable plastic would accumulate even more. This tragic outcome is no longer a prediction but the reality.

그러니 쓰레기 종량제 23년 만에 소설 '곰팡이 꽃'은 제목만큼이나 모순된 낭만주의가 돼버렸다고나 할까…
It is ironic that trash is being romanticized these days, as seen in “Flowers of Mold.” It is the first time in 23 years that this happened, ever since the implementation of the garbage disposal system.
