Winner takes control of their sound

Three of the group’s four members - Kang Seung-yoon, Song Mino and Lee Seung-hoon - wrote and composed each of the new tracks on the album, infusing the group’s personality into their music.
“The goal of this album was to diversify our music spectrum from hip-hop to trap, acoustic and ballads,” said Kang during an interview held last week. “Since we started off with the goal to provide our fans with a gift-like album, the purpose of this album for us is to [be able to] happily stage [music performances].”
Kang continued, “Since this is our first album in four years, we are very nervous and excited at the same time,” said Kang. “Of the tracks included in this album, there are songs that were made two, three or even four years ago. So this album will show the differences between the songs made recently and the ones made few years ago. Since the album includes four years of our work, we think it will be like a present to our fans, while also proving to a wider audience what Winner can do.”

Even in the years since their last release, the members have been working on music nonstop, according to Song.
“Since there are many K-pop groups from other agencies as well as from within YG Entertainment, we gradually have become thankful for even being able to release a single. So it was an unexpected and pleasant surprise, just like discovering a hidden 10,000 won ($9) bill inside a winter coat pocket, when Yang Hyun-seok [head of YG] offered us a chance to release a regular album.”
While each of the group’s members said that they are satisfied with the album regardless of its performance, they hope for the album to bring good memories like the experience they had after the release of their 2017 single “Really Really.”
While producing music, the group found that there was a gap between the type of music they were making and the tastes of YG Entertainment.
“The hip-hop style we pursued was different from the style suggested by YG. We focused on medium tempo songs, and our recent releases were trendy pop tracks mostly revolving around vocals. But for this album, our main track (“EVERYDAY”) is a trap song, a subgenre of hip-hop. Though it may sound a little different from the kind of music we have performed in the past, we believed we would be able to show our own unique version of hip-hop,” said Kang.
During the interview, Winner didn’t forget to express happiness about the recent success of iKON, another male act from YG who enjoyed weeks of success with “Love Scenario,” released in January. While also mentioning the usual success of Big Bang with their latest “Flower Road,” which is still hovering in the top spots on music streaming charts nearly a month after its release on March 13, Winner also expressed concerns about possibly going against the successful trend of YG singers’ performances.
Bucking their concerns, however, Winner’s “EVERYDAY” soared to the top of seven major music streaming charts a day after its release. The record also dominated Apple iTunes album charts in 18 regions, including Brazil, Chile, Hong Kong, Macao, Mexico and Thailand.

위너 ”4년만의 정규, 그간의 음악적 성장 담았다” 자신
그룹 위너가 정규 컴백에 대한 자신감을 보였다. 음악적 성장을 눌러담은 만큼 컴백 기대감더 컸다.
위너는 4일 4년 만에 발표하는 정규 앨범 '에브리데이(EVERYD4Y)' 발매를 기념한 라운드 인터뷰를 열고 컴백 소감과 작업 비하인드를 전했다. 앨범엔 데뷔 이래 최다인 12곡이 수록된다. 강승운, 송민호, 이승훈이 전곡 작사 작곡에 참여해 위너의 색깔을 만들었다. 힙합, 트랩, 어쿠스틱, 발라드 등 음악적 스펙트럼을 넓히고자 노력한 멤버들의 다양한 시도들을 만나볼 수 있을 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.
강승윤은 "4년만에 정규앨범을 들고 온 터라 긴장도 되고 설렌다"며 "수록곡 중에는 4년 전, 3년 전, 2년 전 만든 노래들이 함께 수록되어 있다. 예전에 만든 노래와 최근에 만든 노래의 차이점을 느낄 수 있는 앨범이 될 것이다. 4년간의 음악색깔이 담겨있어서 팬들한테는 선물같은 앨범이고, 대중에게는 위너가 이런 것을 할 수 있다고 보여줄 수 있는 앨범"이라고 자신했다.
이승훈은 "4년만에 정규 앨범이기 때문에 다들 떨리는 기분이다. 무엇보다 멤버들이 전곡 자작곡을 썼기 때문에 우리의 생각이 들어있는 작품이라 내 새끼라는 느낌이 강하다. 그 어느 때보다 떨리고 기대를 많이 하고 있다"고 소감을 밝혔다.
김진우는 "굉장히 설레고 빨리 우리 앨범을 들려드리고 싶은 마음이 크다. 열심히 노력했기 때문에 팬 분들을 생각하며 만들었기 때문에 들려드리고 싶다"고 팬과의 만남을 기대했다.
송민호는 "공백기로 보이는 시간에도 휴식을 하지 않고 곡 작업을 많이 한다. 어느 타이밍이라도 시간이 되면 나올 수 있게끔 총알을 장전하는 편이다. 다른 회사도 많고 YG 소속가수들도 많아서 사실 점점 싱글 하나 내는 것도 감사한 상황인데, 양현석 회장님이 '정규앨범을 내자'고 말씀해주셔서 마치 겨울 점퍼 주머니 속에 있던 만 원짜리를 발견한 것처럼 뜻밖의 기쁨이었다"고 웃었다.
멤버들은 "결과와 상관없이 앨범에 대한 만족도가 크다"면서 "지난해 4월 4일에 '릴리릴리'라는 노래로 큰 사랑을 받은 후, 4라는 숫자가 우리에겐 행운이 됐다"며 이번 컴백에도 좋은 추억을 가져다주길 기대했다.
강승윤은 "이번 앨범 목표는 힙합, 트랩, 어쿠스틱, 발라드 등 음악적 스펙트럼을 넓히는 것이다. 팬 분들에게 선물같은 앨범을 만들자고 시작했기 때문에 행복하게 활동하는 것이 목표"라고 말했다.
멤버들은 이번 앨범 컨펌을 위해 일주일 밤샘 녹음을 했다. "일주일 동안 밤새 녹음을 하고 한꺼번에 회장님한테 컨펌을 받았다. 그 때 '위너 멤버마다 작업하는 스타일이 달라서 재미있는 앨범이 될 것 같다'는 칭찬을 받았다. 승훈 형이 자작곡을 수록하면서, 우리와는 또 다른 작곡 스타일을 보여주면서 그런 칭찬을 받은 것 같다. 회장님 칭찬은 쉽게 들어 볼 수 없어서 정말 좋았다"고 비하인드를 전했다.
강승윤은 "우리는 그동안 YG가 추구하는 힙합과는 거리가 멀었다. 전에도 미디엄템포를 했고 최근에 나온 곡들도 보컬 위주의 트렌디한 팝 장르였다. 이번에는 타이틀곡 자체를 트랩이라는 힙합 장르로 했다. 그동안 보여드린 장르적인 부분에서 위너스럽지 않지만, 그러나 그 장르를 소화해내면서 위너만의 힙합을 보여드릴 수 있을 것 같다"고 자신했다.
멤버들은 "결과와 상관없이 앨범에 대한 만족도가 크다"면서 "지난해 4월 4일에 '릴리릴리'라는 노래로 큰 사랑을 받은 후, 4라는 숫자가 우리에겐 행운이 됐다. 더블 1억 스트리밍 대열에 오른다는 것에 대해선 잘 모르겠다. 좋은 반응을 아예 기대하지 않는 건 아니지만 좋은 추억을 만드는 것을 생각했다"고 덧붙였다.
이번 컴백에 위너는 '비장의 무기'를 꺼냈다고 털어놨다. 송민호는 "공백기라고 해도 우리는 늘 작업을 한다. 언제든지 딱 나올 수 있도록 총알을 장전하는 편이다. 그래서 좋은 작업물을 꾸준히 준비하려고 했다"며 정규 앨범을 낼 수 있는 비결을 전했다.
강승윤은 "우리가 곡을 쌓아뒀다가, 회장님 분위기를 봐서 한꺼번에 다 컨펌을 한다. 약간의 비장의 무기라고 할 수 있다"면서 "이번에 칭찬을 정말 많이 받았다. 회장님과의 분위기가 이렇게 화기애애할 수가 없다. 이렇게 농담을 많이 주고받은 적이 있을까 싶다"고 기뻐했다.
