An international art fair that is becoming a major event in Asia, Art Busan 2018, will open Friday and run through Sunday at Bexco. Featuring some 4,000 works of art from 161 galleries around 15 countries, the fair will open up a weekend of cultural exchange for art lovers in and outside of Korea.

“In an age overflowing with art fairs, we endeavor to differentiate ourselves as a young and innovative art fair with not only creative art works but also other displays and programs for visitors,” said Lee Mi-rim, the managing director of the fair.

Beginning in 2012, the fair is now in its seventh year with a program fuller than ever. A total of 54 galleries from overseas and 107 Korean galleries will be participating, including some big names, as well as rising stars that put on attractive and fresh shows such as: Kukje Gallery, Gallery Hyundai, PKM Gallery and Arario Gallery in Seoul; Johyun Gallery in Busan; Leeahn Gallery and Wooson Gallery in Daegu.

Galleries from other countries mostly in Asia include some well-known names, too. For some galleries, this event will be the first time that they will knock on the doors of the Korean market, such as China’s Platform China Contemporary Art Institute, Thailand’s Tang Contemporary Art and The Drawing Room from the Philippines.

Six special exhibitions will be held inside of the vast array of art works, providing a creative touch to the whole fair. Though all the works are meaningful in their own way, the “Uncertainty in Existence,” a media art collaboration of four artists - Yang Minha, Raven Kwok, Lee Kyung-ho and Ohmaki Shinji - and artist Park Eun-sun’s sculptures should not be missed. And for the second time, the fair will also feature design works in a separate section.

The “Art Bus” will run twice everyday and take 40 visitors around six galleries and museums throughout Busan on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The bus is free, but it may cost visitors extra to enter certain galleries. The schedules for the buses and “Conversations,” a discussion session with various panels, are provided on the website, www.artbusankorea.com.

“The citizens of Busan don’t have many opportunities to experience art and culture first hand,” said director Lee. “We hope that this art fair transforms the whole city of Busan into a festivity of art, but also expand outside of Korea as well.”
