Korea, China resume talks on fishing after 2 years

Korea and China will hold a meeting on fishery cooperation next week, resuming regular consultations that were suspended for nearly two years because of a diplomatic row over a missile shield, sources said Tuesday.

The two countries are in the middle of discussions on the 10th Korea-China meeting on fishery cooperation to be held in China sometime next week, diplomatic sources said. The meeting will bring together officials from both countries’ foreign ministries as well as government agencies on fishing and maritime security. They are expected to discuss ways to stop illegal Chinese fishing on the Korean side of the Yellow Sea.

The meeting marks the resumption of biannual consultations after relations between the two countries soured last year over Korea’s agreement to deploy a U.S. missile shield known as Thaad that China believes threatens its security interests.

The last meeting was held in Korea in July 2016.

The consultations began in mid-2012 to enhance cooperation on maritime affairs after several Chinese boats were caught illegally fishing in the Yellow Sea.

In addition to the consultation on fishing, the countries announced they would hold their first joint economic cooperation committee meeting in nearly two years in Beijing on Friday.

Several Korean films were also invited to the ongoing Beijing International Film Festival and screened in theaters in the Chinese capital, the first screening of Korean films in nearly two years after the Thaad row brought the number of Korean films released in China to zero.
