Pansori masters bring years of experience to ‘Tale of Simcheong’

테스트

Ahn Sook-sun, left, and Yu Su-jeong, right, are the top two pansori “Queens” at the National Changgeuk Company of Korea.

When pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing) singer Kim Seong-nyeo was appointed to lead the National Changgeuk Company in 2012, she announced that she’ll breathe new life into changgeuk, or traditional Korean opera, so that even young Koreans enjoy traditional performing arts by retelling the five surviving pansori stories - Chunhyangga, Heungbuga, Jeokbyeokga, Sugungga and Simcheongga.

For the past six years, Kim has invited world renowned directors and has added modern touches to the traditional stories. In 2011, German stage director Achim Freyer worked on “Sugungga,” while American-Romanian theater director Andrei Serban worked with “Chunhyangga” in 2014. Famous Korean playwright Ko Sun-woong was also invited to work on “Heungbuga” and opera director Lee So-young had a go at working with the famously difficult story “Jeokbyeokgga.”

The company only has one tale left to tell, the beloved story of “Simcheongga.”

For this production, Kim decided to go back to its roots and asked pansori master Ahn Sook-sun and stage director Sohn Jin-chaek to produce a genuine changgeuk piece using the tale of Simcheong. Because the National Theater of Korea, where the company usually stages performances, is under renovation, the upcoming “Simcheongga” will run from April 25 to May 6 at the Myeongdong Art Theater in central Seoul.

Kim entrusted Ahn, 69, to write narration and to perform it for the upcoming performance. The role of the narrator, known as dochang, will be played by pansori master Yu Su-jeong, 57, when Ahn is not performing.

Ahn and Yu are known as the two leading female pansori singers in Korea. They met 40 years ago while learning under the teacher and pansori maestro, Kim So-hui. Later, Yu followed Ahn and joined the National Changgeuk Company, becoming Ahn’s apprentice.

To learn about the upcoming performance, the JoongAng Sunday, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily sat down with the two masters recently for an interview. The following are edited excerpts.

Q. Ahn, why has Yu been so special to you?

테스트

Top: Ahn Sook-sun, left, and Yu Su-jeong, right, star as the dochang, or narrators, in the upcoming pansori, traditional Korean opera, “Simcheongga.” Middle: Choreographer Ahn Eun-mi, left, and director Sohn Jin-chaek, right, talk to the cast of “Simcheongga.” Above: Lead actors Yu Taepyungyang, left, and Min Eun-kyung, right, practice “Simcheongga” at the National Changgeuk Company of Korea. [SHIN IN-SEOB]

A. Ahn
: She had a natural gift. Although she has gained a lot of weight now, she used to be slim and very pretty. (laughs) She was good hearted but was quite lazy at studying. I wanted to lead her so that she can earn the title of a renowned pansori singer and perform in front of many people with what she had. I didn’t understand why she was wasting her talent. Now, we have become teachers and the oldest [members] in the National Changgeuk Company who take care of each other.

Yu: [Ahn’s] first words to me were “Hey, what are you so high and mighty about?” The words pierced my heart and I couldn’t sleep for days from crying. Eventually, I took the national college entrance exam and studied hard for six years. I still think about where I would be if that didn’t happen. I’m very thankful [for Ahn]. Now, whenever I face personal problems, I run to Ahn to ask for advice. She’s not only my pansori teacher but also my life mentor.

They say being a pansori singer is a never-ending road. Why is that?

Ahn
: As you age, you see objects with a different perspective. When you’re young, you only look at the outside and think there’s no need to look inside, but now I want to see the inside. Pansori has an inner side to it. Pansori is made up of literature, acting and music so it is malleable and there’s no such thing as a complete [piece]. It’s the same with how people live.

Yu: With pansori, I think energy gradually accumulates. [I think] because of such accumulated energy, [Ahn] always performs as if she is possessed on stage. The rest of us are not at that stage. We have a long way to go to become a virtuoso like Ahn.

Ahn: I’m not a virtuoso. Even if I don’t practice for two or three days, it shows [in my performance]. [In that sense,] pansori is very honest. Nowadays, I get scared before going on stage. I pray a lot to control the fear in my heart.

Director Sohn said, “Pansori is in the beats of all contemporary music.” Can you talk about the rhythm?

Yu
: Eight years ago, when we were performing “Sanbul,” Ahn was the composer and she started to rap quickly. She had to be exact so that [the crowd could properly] hear her. So, whenever that part came, her artery was about to burst. (laughs)

Ahn: Our teacher Choi Baek-ho said, “Rap came from pansori. All the old teachers were rappers.” When you hear the part where Simcheong falls [into the water], the words are incredible. Although the author [of the tale of Simcheong] is unknown, I’m certain it was written by high class writers.

From what I saw at practice, the dochang is quite prominent in the performance.

Yu
: Maybe it’s because the performance is dedicated to Ahn. (laughs) I think it’s [the result of] the director wanting to showcase pansori in its original form. [The director] told us to try not to act, but rather, sing.

Ahn: To be honest, it’s not my turn [yet] to receive such dedication. It should be the teachers [before me] who have placed all their fervor into changgeuk. I’m working to the late hours because I share the same heart as the director, wanting to make pansori the musical play that represents our country. I’m hoping changgeuk becomes like China’s Beijing opera and Japan’s kabuki.
