Kim declares governorship bid

Rep. Kim Kyoung-soo of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) Thursday declared a bid for the South Gyeongsang governorship just hours after cancelling an announcement, refusing to bow to demands he stay out of the race after revelations of his connection to a powerful blogger suspected of manipulating online public opinion.

민주당 김경수 의원이 목요일 오전에 예정됐던 출마 선언 기자회견을 취소했으나 불과 몇 시간 후에 기자회견을 열어 경남지사 출마를 선언했다. 온라인 댓글 여론조작 혐의를 받고 있는 드루킹과의 의심스런 관계가 폭로된 이후 경남지사 출마를 포기하라는 요구를 거부한 것이다.
In his declaration, Kim said he would fully cooperate with any investigation and condemned opposition parties for what he called “absurd political attacks” on him. “As I declare my bid for the South Gyeongsang governorship, I also declare my full willingness to be questioned if necessary,” said the first-term lawmaker at the National Assembly.

출마 선언에서 김 의원은 어떤 수사에도 충분히 협조하겠다고 말했고 자신에 대해 야당이 ‘터무니없는 정치 공격’을 하고 있다고 비난했다. 국회 초선 의원인 김 의원은 “경남지사 선거에 출마를 선언한다. 또한 필요하다면 성실히 수사를 받을 것을 선언한다”고 말했다.
After Kim abruptly called off an announcement scheduled for 10:30 a.m., apparently affected by news reports that Kim Dong-won, a powerful blogger who goes by the ID Druking, was involved in a cybersmear campaign against candidate Ahn Cheol-soo in last year’s presidential election, many thought his bid was dead.

드루킹이라는 필명으로 활동한 김동원씨가 지난해 대선에서 안철수 후보에 대한 여론조작에 관여했다는 보도에 영향을 받았는지 오전 10시30분에 예정했던 출마 선언을 갑자기 취소하자 김 의원이 경남지사 출마를 포기한 것이라고 많은 사람들이 생각했다.
Instead, Kim expressed his determination to enter and win the race, undeterred by attacks from the opposition, saying, “I concluded that I cannot walk away from South Gyeongsang in a full crisis because of irresponsible political warfare.”

대신 김 의원은 야당의 정치적 공격에 굴하지 않고 출마해서 선거에서 이기겠다는 각오를 밝혔다. “무책임한 정쟁 때문에 총체적 위기에 처한 경남에서 그냥 물러날 수는 없다고 결론 내렸다.

문재인 대통령의 측근인 김 의원과 민주당은 김 의원이 드루킹 사건과 밀접하게 관련돼 있다는 점점 커지는 의혹 때문에 궁지에 몰려 있다. 드루킹은 한국 최대 포탈 네이버에서 특정 기사나 글에 댓글이나 좋아요를 여러 차례 올릴 수 있는 프로그램을 사용해서 1월에 온라인 여론을 조작했다는 혐의로 구속됐다.
