Despite what many people think, travel doesn’t need to be a big ordeal that requires weeks of planning. Instead, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism argues, travel should be a regular and hassle-free part of people’s lives. This spring, the ministry is encouraging locals to get out on weekdays and non-holidays with its latest seasonal promotions.

The ministry has designated April 28 to May 13 as Spring Travel Week, and during the period, many leisure service companies and regional government offices will offer discounts on tickets to amusement parks and transportation across the country. About 770 locations including hotels, museums and arboretums will offer discounts. The designated travel week includes Labor Day on May 1 and Children’s Day on May 5.

The theme for the travel week was chosen because many people have pointed out that they didn’t really have enough mental or physical energy to plan a trip, which many consider as extra work outside of their regular routine, according to a survey conducted by the ministry last year.

The easiest way to appeal to local travelers, the ministry has decided, is to make places that have been featured in TV shows and movies more appealing with guided tours and cheaper transportation options. Seeing that many travelers choose their travel destinations based on what they see on their favorite TV shows, the ministry has listed 17 familiar spots on its website. Based on what activities are available in each region, the ministry even suggests which places are better for families with children, for couples and for single travelers.

Museum San in Wonju, Gangwon, which was featured in a TV commercial for a coffee brand is recommended for family travelers as it has enough outdoor space for children to run around, while the House of Choi Champan in Hadong, South Gyeongsang, is good for couples because the historical drama “Moon Embracing the Sun,” which depicts the love story of characters played by star actors Kim Soo-hyun and Han Ga-in, was filmed there.

It is also a popular place to visit for book lovers as the house was built to recreate the setting of the novel “Toji” by Park Kyong-ni (1926-2008), which was also made into a TV drama.

There are guided tour programs ready at these spots as well. The list and other information about the Spring Travel Week, go to travelweek.visitkorea.or.kr or call 1330 for travel assistance in languages other than Korean.
